Considering this, the 49ers badly needed a win against the Gamecocks to keep themselves afloat. However, USC thrilled the crowd with a an al most flawless night of basketball, fighting to a victory in front of 8,523 people in Columbia. Three Carolina starters scored in double figures to give USC a much needed win after a road loss to St. Joseph’s. ) Fogler utilized UNCC’s height disadvantage to his favor by continuously passing to ball inside to Petravi cius, who ended up with 19 points, 13 of them on free throws. Grant was also a factor as he chipped in 15 points. Although point guard Jobey Thomas, the 49ers’ leading scorer, led all scorers with 21 points, he was held somewhat in check by Edson. Edson had four steals against Thomas while scoring 18 points for the victory. Sophomore guard Aaron Lucas had five assists and six points in the game, and directed the Gamecock of fense while playing 35 minutes. “Lucas is one guy we can’t have out of the game,” Fogler said. "He leads our team on the floor." Thepme was also a double milestone, bang Davis’ 100th career game and Fogler’s 100th win as USC head coach. “Yippee,” Fogler said when told about the century victory. “Big shit.” St Joseph's 71, USC 64 The Gamecocks continued their 0-for-road games losing streak with a 71 -64 loss to the St. Joseph’s Hawks at The Palestra in Philadelphia. USC managed to hang with the Hawks for the first half, trailing 31 -30 at halftime. However, St. Joe’s used a 14-20 shooting performance, plus six of seven from the 3-point stripe, to cool off the Gamecocks. Davis scored 16 to lead the Gamecocks. He was followed by Kitchings, who put down 11 points, and Grant who grabbed 10 rebounds and added seven points. Eidson also tallied five steals and nine points. However, USC could find no answers for the hot shooting Hawks, who were led by 21 points from Tim Brown and 14 from Marvin O’Connor. N’aim Cren shaw and Bill Phillips threw in 11 each to lead their team to just their third victory of the season. USC was left looking for answers as they lost their second game on the road, following a loss at Clemson five days before. USC was also beaten twice on a neu tral court at the Puerto Rico Shootout. USC 86, Campbell 64 The South Carolina Gamecocks bounced back from a disappointing loss at Clemson with a resounding 86 64 victory over the Campbell Camels. Eidson had 13 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and five steals in 22 minutes, and Bradley added 15 points, hittiiig on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Twelve of the 13 players who suited up for the game scored for the Game cocks, including Petravicius with 12 and Davis with 11. Despite the effort turned in by the team, Eidson was the one to watch. The freshman was on the floor early in the first half when the Gamecocks took control with a 19-0 run. He only scored one basket, but he got the fast break going with a couple of steals and assists. He added a 3-pointer in a 15-7 run in the first half, and his steal and ensuing layup gave the Gamecocks a42-20 half time lead. Campbell didn't let the game get too far out of hand in the second half by hitting 11-of-19 three-pointers. The Camels shot 39 percent overall, but 50 percent on three-pointers. Darrin Hucks hit 5-of-10 3-pointers to lead the Camels with 15. Adam Fellers added 14 points, including four 3-pointers. “We gave them too many open looks from three point range,” Gamecock head coach Eddie Fogler saidon the Camels' beyond-the-arc barrage. Clemson 61, USC 58 USC entered its game against the rival Clemson Tigers with an overall record of 5-2. The Gamecocks started the game at Littlejohn Col iseum shooting well from the floor, going on a 7-0 run early in the first half. Kitchings dunked two straight pass es from Eidson during the run. Clemson would answer with a small scoring run of its own, led by sophomore Will Solomon, who came in to the game leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring. USC went into halftime with a one-point lead, and the second half went back and forth between the two teams until Clemson ran off eight unanswered points late in the half. Lucas stole two straight inbound pass es with less than a minute in the game to reduce the Clemson lead to one. However, Kinloch called time out with none remaining, earning an automatic techni cal foul. The following shots proved to be the differ ence in the game. Although Clemson won 61-58, there was a contro versial footnote to this game as coach Lariy Shyatt and Fogler were involved in a verbal skirmish after the game. I can tell you what they’re not go ing to find. They’re not going to find that a chenii cl imbalance caused Rocker to speak the way he did, or that he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder linked to something that went on in his childhood They’re going to find out that John Rocker is filled with hate. Hate toward anything that indiffer ent from him. Hate toward anything that gets in his way or holds him up. Pure hatred. Hatred, however, is not illegal. We all hate in some fashion. And we have had instances where we regretted things that have come out of our mouths. John Rocker has zero regret for the things he said. His only regret is for the backlash that was caused from his ignorance. Some would say that Rocker was ig norant solely for saying the things that he did to a magazine of such magnitude. I would tend to agree with that, but obviously, his ignorance lies with the thoughts that are in his head and the feel ings that are in his heart. Again, these feelings as well as voiced opinions such as Rocker’s are not pun ishable by law. Therefore, Rocker will not go to jail. That was never an issue. He shouldn’t be in jail, but if you’re the Atlanta Braves organization, how can you let a person who voices such opin ions wear your uniform? Is that not a condonement of his ac tions? How can the ignorant attitudes and opinions of individuals such as John Rock er be tolerated? Yes, baseball is a game. Games are meant to be fun and games are meant to entertain. Games are not meant to give ignorant ' people platforms'to offend as many people as possible. John Rocker crossed a line and will probably never be allowed to cross back. He has already been openly criticized by his most high-profile teammates. Brian Jordan doesn’t respect him. Chipper Jones doesn’t want to be in the same county with him. Tom Glavine said it would take drastic changes in Rocker’s attitude to re deem himself with teammates. Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone was quoted as saying Rocker’s career will go down the tubes after the incident. In an interview with the Atlanta Jour nal-Constitution, Braves president Stan Kasten said, "We've worked for years to nbt ever look like this." All-time home run leader Hank Aaron said he was very sick and disgusted about the whole situation and questioned “how Rocker could continue in baseball.” Jack Ellis, mayor of Rocker’s home town of Macon, Ga., said Rocker owed an apology to everyone in America. Rocker shouldn’t have the support of any of these aforementioned people. He shouldn’t have the support of the city of Atlanta. He shouldn t hav e the support of Ma jor League Baseball and he shouldn’t have the support of the fans who pay to watch the game. So, the guy saved 37 games last year. Who cares? Lots of guys have saved 37 games be fore. If Rocker is allowed to continue to play major league baseball, it will be a trav esty. The Braves should get rid of him, and he shouldn’t be picked up by any other team. Anything less would be condonement. The Atlanta Braves, Major League Baseball, professional sports in general and the United States of America can’t af ford to condone the actions of truly igno rant people. John Rocker is nothing special. He’s just a guy who can throw hard. Mitch Williams threw hard for a few years; so did Rob Dibble and so did Mark Wohlers. Where are they now?
