There are times in a person’s life where he or she has a chance to seize the moment. And to everyone’s shock and surprise, the father of two on his “ day made what NBC’s Johnny Miller, the 1975 Open winner, called “the greatest golf shot I have ever seen.” With all the pressure you could ; imagine, Payne Stewart made an up-' hill, impossible putt look easy. As the crowd went nuts, Stewart yelled, and his caddie jumped into his arms in jubilation. Stewart’s next move was to walk over to the deflat * ed Mickelson. ’« In one of the most poignant scenes ever witnessed, Stewart grabbed the face of Mickelson. With tears in his eyes, he looked at him and whis pered into Mickelson’s ear. The TV camera barely picked it up, but the words that came out were unexpect- „ ed. Stewart simply said, “There is noth ing like being a father.” The world needs more days like these and more men like Payne Stew art. There is something about a mo ment in time that makes a grown man cry. The world of golf will always re member Stewart, and, if we heed his words, we will all be better off.
