Worthen looks to build on solid 1998 campaign By Kara Irving Special to The Gamecock During the 1990s, the numbers for the South Carolina men’s soccer team tell the tale. With the seventh win ningest active men’s soccer coach in Mark Berson, the fifth best Division I attendance and 13 NCAA appear ances, Carolina is no stranger to suc cess. But the 90s have been very fruit ful for the Gamecocks who look to end the millennium, with their second NCAA finals appearance of the decade and 14th overall appearance. During the 90s, Carolina has advanced to the NCAA Championships eveiy season except one. During that same time frame, USC has had 12 or more wins in eight of the last nine seasons. In the last six seasons, the Gamecocks stepped up the level of success with 16 or more wins five times. The 90s have been productive and successful, with USC going 113-39-12 for a winning percent age of over 73 percent. During the last season of the decade, Mark Berson looks to continue the Gamecocks success, using the same objectives that have gotten USC this far. “Our goal for the 1999 season remains the same as it has for many “Our goal for the 1999 season remains the same as it has for many seasons which is to finish the season either No. 1 or No. 2 in the South Region." Mark Berson USC Men's Soccer coach seasons, which is to finish the season either No. 1 or No. 2 in the South Region,” Head Coach Mark Berson said. “We look to win enough games in our region and nationally to earn an NCAA Championship berth. We also look for improvement on a week-to week basis.” Last season, the young Carolina squad ended the season with a strong 16-5 record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships. The 1998 Carolina team dealt with the loss of offensive threats Clint Mathis and Josh Wolff by being one of the strongest defensive squads in the nation. Behind All-American Hemy Ring, the Carolina backfield allowed only 14 goals in 21 matches. All of the strong USC backfield returns for the 1999 season, giving Carolina a combination of experience and a solid incoming class. The Gamecocks return six seniors to the lead this season and add 10 newcomers to form a strong Carolina unit. “Last year, we had a very successful season as far as great performances during the season and good wins over national teams,” Berson said. “But we hope that this year we cam have the type of team that will enable us to advance even farther in the NCAA Tournament.” Special to The Gamecock Joey Worthen (above) and Henry Ring (below) lead a solid group of returners into the 1999 season. 1999 USC Men’s Soccer Schedule 9/1 ^S| The Citadel 600 p.m. 9/4 Davidson 7:00 p.m. 9/7 ar UNC Charlotte 7:00 p.m. 9/11 Wake Forest 7.-00 p.m. 9/14 ' ■ Winthrop 7:00 p.m: PROVIDENCE KICKOFF CLASSIC 9/17 Air Force 1 "7:00 p.m. 9/22 William and Mary 7:00 p.m. 9/26 — __ at Furman 2:00 p.m ■■ Mk . » U HI' I fill k C7 , HI TGERS MET LIFE SOCCER CLASSIC / % & '0/l | #\St Jol^s 6:00.p m. 10/3 • ^ g 1 ■ V-Rutgers £ . 2:00 pm. 10/9 ' Clcmson 7:00 p.m."" SUNBEAM SOCCER CLASSIC 10/15 vs. Mercer 8:00 p.m. 10/17 vs. South Florida 2:00 p/m. 10/20 at WbfFord 7:00 p.m. 10/26 College ofCharleston 7:00 p.m. NIKE/TOWN of MT. Bienias returns to lead the Gamecocks Into 1999. 1 Bienias, Ondo lead Gamecocks By Kara Irving Special to The Gamecock The South Carolina women’s soccer team topped off its most successful season in its four-year history with many program firsts. Carolina advanced to its first NCAA tournament in 1998, joining five other SEC teams for an SEC-high in that category. The Gamecocks won a program high 11 matches in ending the season 11-7-1. USC also registered its first nation al ranking, No. 24 by Soccer News, as well as wins over ranked opponents like SEC rival Georgia. The 1999 Gamecocks look to add to the many firsts of that squad. Carolina loses only four starters from the 1998 team and returns leading scorer Jennie Opdo, who ended the season with 24 points. Morgan Mclntryre and freshman Lydia Bienias were second on the team in points with 18. The combination of all three offen sive threats joining the solid Carolina defense led by senior Angela Austin makes for an even more promising 1999 season. Lydia Bienias Bienias, named to the third team Aii-ooutneast Kegion team, is a Gig Harbor, Wash., native who also earned second team All-SEC honors in November after a strong rookie sea son. The versatile Bienias played any where from forward to midfielder to sweeper for the Gamecocks during the 1998 season. She ended the season tied for in scoring with eight goals and had two assists for 18 points. Bienias also was named to the Soccer Buzz All-Freshman Southeast Region squad, as well as the Soccer Buzz freshman All-America third team. Melinda Carter The freshman defender earned NSCAA All-Southeast region first team honors. Carter, a Plano, Texas, native, becomes the first Gamecock to earn first team honors, as Angela Austin (1997) and Debbie Smith (1996) both earned second team honors. 1998 review The Gamecocks earned a 4-4 con ference record in the increasingly tough SEC. ■ Carolina advanced to the SEC tournament as the second wild card. I UbC won a program-high four SEC matches, including a win over No. 17 Georgia in front of a record crowd of 1,208 fans. ■ Lexi Tburtellotte joined Bienias as an All-SEC second team member. ■ Seven Gamecocks were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll: Jennie Ondo Linda Greene Emily Crain Gina Iacovella Mindy Sanders Charlotte Moore Lexi Iburtellotte USC Women’s Soccer Roster no. name Pos H Class 00 Jessica Freas GK 5-10 Jr. 0 Carolyn Ortega GK 5-4 R-Fr. 1 Carrie Warner GK 5-5 Sr. 2 Brynn Shaffer M 5-1 Fr. 3 Becky Leeper F/M 5-4 Fr. 4 Melinda Carter D 5-6 So. 5 Brooke McPartland M/D 5-8 So. 6 Morgan McIntyre M/F 5-7 So.
