Whether you’re new to USC or a seasoned student here, The Gamecock thinks it’s important for you to be familiar with the names and faces you’ll be reading about during this school year and per haps beyond. Included here are presidents of organiza tions listed in USC’s Hall of Leaders, as well as USC’s highest-ranking officials and other faces you’ll be seeing a great deal this year. • BIOGRAPHY: I graduated'from USC in 1978 with a BA degree in political science. In 1980,1 received a master’s in education from USC. I began working for the university in 1980 as director of student media. I’ve served as assistant dean of students, director of student activities, and currently serve as director of student life. I’m married to Mary Anne McClure Brewer and I have three children. I enjoy ompetitive softball, non-competitive golf, reading, coaching, youth basketball and baseball, and cheering for the Gamecocks. • LAST BOOK READ: Against the Tide by Harriet Keyserling • FAVORITE QUOTE: “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” -Will Rogers • BIOGRAPHY: I am a native of Greenville, S.C., and I’m majoring in hotel, restaurant and tourism administration. I serve as a senator from the College of Applied Professions and as co-chairman of the Senate judiciary committee. As president of the Ambassadors, I hope to expand our involve ment in campus activities and in the community. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, politics, travel ing, and meeting new people. • LAST BOOK READ: The Secret History by Donna Tartt " • FAVORITE QUOTE: “If you like laws and - sausages, you should never watch either one being made.” -Otto von Bismarck Director, Housing and judicial Programs • BIOGRAPHY: I’ve been at USC since 1992, and I’m a clinical faculty member in the College of Education. I have previous experience at the University of Georgia and the University of Florida, where I received my Ph.D. I’m father to two daughters, Becca, 13, and Emily, 10, and hus band to Sheila, a special education teacher. I’m an avid reader, learner, spiritual traveler and aging athlete. I enjoy reading, singing, and meeting and greeting new people, and I’m involved in many campus organizations. Tb improve AAAS this year, I’d like to have a “family” atmosphere in order to address and combat campus issues and situations with a united effort, while educating and enlightening ourselves and others for increased knowledge and understanding. • LAST BOOK READ: Fly Girl by Omar Tyrees • FAVORITE QUOTE: “You either do or you do not. There is no such thing as try!” -Yoda President, Residence Hall Association • BIOGRAPHY: I'm from Glendale, California, but have lived a pretty uneventful life until coming to school in Columbia. In my two years here, I have tried to see all the Southeast has to offer. I've made it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and Savannah for St. Patty’s Day (which doesn’t have anything on Five Points’ celebration). My interests include bas ketball, volleyball, racquetball, weightlifting and traveling. I also enjoy meeting new people and try ing new things. Dial 777-3888. President, Sorority Council • BIOGRAPHY: I m a senior broadcast journalism major, planning to graduate in May 2000. I am from Greenville, S.C., and 21 years old. This summer, I irltemed at WOLO-TV as an associate producer. After graduation, I either pl$n to find a job in broadcast news or travel for my sorority as a chap ter consultant. My years at USC have been the most amazing years of my life. I encourage all of you to get involved on campus and make the most of your time here. I came to USC to do something dif ferent than all of my high-school classmates. I know I definitely made the right decision. I got involved with Greek Life my sophomore year and have not been disappointed yet. I’ve done many things on campus, but none have been as reward ing as helping out and participati ng in Dance Marathon, which I urge everyone to get involved with. • LAST BOOK READ: Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. I did a lot of breakdancing in 2nd and 3rd grade and have listened to the radio all my | life. I started working at WUSC my second semes ter here at USC. Except for one semester at KGLT 1 at Montana State, I’ve worked here constantly ■ since then. As a second-year senior, I plan on earn- g ing my English degree soon and pursuing a Ph.D in English. • LAST BOOK READ: The Collected Poems of Jean Toomer • FAVORITE QUOTE: “Life sometimes gets all up in your ass, so baby, you got to work it out.” -DeLaSoul President, Carolina Productions • BIOGRAPHY: Bom in 1978,1 come to the University of South Carolina by way of Greenville, S.C. I sincerely believe that we learn the most important lessons outside of class, so I am involved in many different activities here at USC to enhance my college experience. In addition to being presi dent of Carolina Productions, I am a member of the Russell House Advisory Board, a member of the MAP team and a founding chairperson of USC’s Dance Marathon. When free time jumps in my face, I spend it dancing or involved in sports. • LAST BOOK READ: Winning Every Day by Lou Holtz • FAVORITE QUOTE: “Strive for perfection and you will always achieve excellence.” University President and His Wife • BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Palms: I took office in 1991 as USC’s 26th president. I’ve served in higher education through out my career, including 23 years at Emory University in Atlanta. I’ve committed myself to pur suing USC’s vision of becoming one of the top five public universities in the Southeast and deserving membership in the Association of American Universities, which includes 60 of the nation’s finest universities, public and private. Mrs. Palms: I was bom in Charleston and gradu ated from Bishop England High School and Sacred Heart College in Charlotte. We’ve been married for 41 years and have three children and six grandchil dren. Mrs. Palms: “A thoughtful person is a joyful person.” ^ 'Editor, The Gamecock • BIOGRAPHY: I’m a senior, and a political science and history double major from Sound Beach, New York. Through The Gamecock, I won a prestigious Anti-Defamation League fellowship to Israel and Poland, where I was able to study the Holocaust, which is the period of history I am most interested I in. At The Gamecock, I have served as news editor, A managing editor and editor in chief, which I will U| once again be serving as this fall. I just completed an internship this past summer at the Democratic National Committee and at the Dutko Group, a lobbying firm in Washington, D.C. • LAST BOOK READ: And The Band Played On by ■ Viktor E. My wife, two sons and I are all graduates of Carolina, and I have two more children who expect to be part of this tradition in years to come. While I’ve been involved with theatre here, most of my time is now devoted to Student Media. I have contributed sever al pieces to Garnet & Black, and I have served The | Gamecock in the Viewpoints and Features sections. This fall, I serve as editor of Garnet & Black and as Viewpoints editor of The Gamecock.
