For a loud and laid-back atmosphere, I suggest John Paul's. This is a Western steakhouse at its best. A few things, however, are worth noting about the food at John Paul's. I have always been a regular customer at his Greenville restaurant and have usuauy Deen sausnea wnen searcmng for a decent meal in a raucous atmosphere. Attention all you rib lovers: John Paul's has the best ribs I have come across in the area. However, if you are a fan of fresh vegetables, look elsewhere. Both times I have dined at the Columbia restaurant, the vegetables obviously had been frozen. Additionally, on my second visit, I ordered a steak, which was very overcooked. The prices can seem relatively high for the quality of food. The service is friendly and usual! ly timely. The Internet for some users is simply for basic functions such as email and current events. For other people, it is athriving orchard of data. Many of these users crave foster connection speeds and more time for a connection, and don't want their phone lines tied up in the process. For these users, the Columbia area has something to offer. A growing number of different connection types are available locally to the average user. For those users on campus, USC offers a data connection to the campus' Internet backbone. If you live on campus, this means you can use the university's high-powered data connectivity to roar out onto the Internet at phenomenal speeds. Hie campus connection is a very cost-effective option; all you need is an ethernet card in your computer, and you're on your way. For those readers living off campus who desire faster connection speeds and are willing to pay a little extra, Columbia has a few options. The first and cheapest alternative to phone connection is Integrated Services Digital Network. ISDN is a speedier cousin to your conventional phone line that can be run to your residence. Connection speeds are about twice those of the fastest conventional modem. The price tag, aside from installation fees, is roughly $30 a month, including Internet service itself. Then there are cable modems. These devices use the cable lines already found in most abodj^. like ISDN, this option doesn't consume your phone time, and affords speeds four times that of the average modem. This option costs roughly $40 a month and includes Internet service. The ADSL connection is another kind of cable modem. This is perhaps the most costly of all the options at $60 a month, but it provides speeds very close to the backbone-connected modems, such as a Tl. When ronsiderinp these nntinns think about what your needs are. If you use your connection simply to check e-mail, how you do it isn't as important. If, however, the time you spend on the Internet means you miss important phone calls, it might be more effective to get an alternative connection. Tate can be reached at tate@quakemaU.coTru
