Wednesday, June 9,1999 Trammell could be as popular as... WALLACE continued from page 10 a wider fan base of more than just 14year-old girls. Last week in Boise, Idaho, at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Trammell brought home two titles. After finishing second place his freshman year in the 110 meter hurdles, Trammell won this year's event with a icinr.Hrnnninor tranV rornrrt nf 1 3 4.^ seconds. He also ran the second leg of the men's relay team that won the 4 x 100 meter title the day before his individual conquest. What was TVammell's response after his histoiy-making run? "I felt okay. I didn't do my best." Excuse me? Trammell went on to say he ran a "terrible technical race," but still torched the rest of the competition. By the way, in case anyone is wondering how fast he really is, for all vrni fnnthflll pynprf.s hp mlitinplv runs a 4.3-second 40-yard dash and has been clocked at 4.1 seconds several times. No, that's not a misprint. In my 20 years here on earth, Fve thought it to be humanly impossible for a man's legs to run that fast If 4.3 is flying, 4.1 is... uh, well, faster than flying, whatever that might be. The type of times TVammell has put up this year are Olympic-caliber. Next summer, Trammell should be competing in Sydney for the 2000 Summer Games, and he'll barely be in his 20's. He will only get better, scary as it sounds, and the strange thing is, most of the university, let alone the city, doesn't have a clue who this guy is. If USC would start marketing this guy, he could be huge. There are certain NCAA rules against that kind of thing, Fm sure, but who ever Mows the rules? With rumors circulating that he has irtAiiiwA/I oVtAn^- *Mi+li?rT r\o/^o An nnr] UiljlUlCU. dUUUl pUI/LllAg pauo Ui 1 ClllLl wanting to play for Lou, my mind fills with visions of future ESPN highlights. Suit Mr. Trammell up, let him return kick-offs, let guys create a wedge, make a few blocks, and no one is going to catch the man. The only question is... can he take a hit? Coach Holtz, here is my suggestion: after he wins the gold medal in 2000 in Australia, put him through a rigorous spring training, teach him a few slant. routes, give him whatever number he wants, and let him loose. I might be a dreamer, but we all know that if you are a Carolina fen, you have to be. Tferrence Trammell, however, is not a dream. Somehow, he is real, and somehow, he is here. n i i : I i 1 ' Rnivpc; en 1 wjL*Jr JL ' VteX-ikZr matchup c By Brad Walters Braves Report Atlanta 7, Colorado 2 (June 1) L: B.
