UT Head Coach Phillip Fulmer, Arkansas Head Coach Houston Nutt and New York Knicks guard Charlie Ward (I interviewed Ward last year for a story on former USC QB Anthony Wright). Who else? Let's see. USC men's tennis coach Kent DeMars always "gave good quote," as did women's coach Arlo Elkins, academics counselor Kris Kordonowy and former USC basketball player and current radio announcer Casey Manning. Herbert Lee Davis is also a fun person to interview, but I wouldn't recommend asking him how he fared against me in our last H-O-R-S-E game (I think he might still be a little sore). OK, then, what about the worst interviews? Well, with my apologies to Auburn Sports Information Director Kent Partridge (who next to our own Kerry Tharp is undoubtedly the nicest SID in the business), the prize would have to go to former Tigers QB Dameyune Craig. Not only was Craig arrogantly flippant and belligerently unresponsive, the only time he did open his mouth xl X J _ - _ X 1 wnnoui derisiveness was xo merely recite the standard sports cliches. Florida football coach Steve Spurrier ("Who the *&#% transferred you to this number?") was also bad, as was Florida freshman forward Mike Miller. And last but not least, the charming Jackie Sherrill of Mississippi State. Sherrill promptly instructed me to "go and *&#% myself' when I asked him whether he got in trouble with the animal-rights people for castrating a bull in front of his players in an unorthodox, motivational ploy a few years back. Well, there you have it, the best and worst of my Common Folklore interviews. So much for going out with class. Oh well. Next week, I'll take another look back, this time at the best and worst sports headlines of the past two years (provided I don't get that, um, "interview" with Inga Hammond in Atlanta this weekend).
