The USC men's team is eighth in the country, while the women find themselves just out of the top 10, at the 11th spot. Clemson's men's team is in ninth. Much like any other sport, the USC-Clemson rivalry in this'sport is a bitter one. I "The rivalry is so intense because of the great amount of mutual respect between the two teams," USC coach Curtis Frye said. "In our sport, Clemson is always a national powerhouse, and whenever you beat them, there is a great feeling of satisfaction." Recently named Coach of the Year by the Track and Field Coaches Association, Fiye also believes this particular meet will be great preparation for the upcoming SEC outdoor m season. "Going into this meet, we are looking to I win, of course, but more importantly it is a chance for some of our athletes to gain some confidence and training for the SEC outdoor season," Frye said. "If we can perform as well as we did in the SEC indoor championships in all the meets, I we will be very successful in the spring." After all, the Gamecock men have two NCAA indoor champions on their side. Senior Brad Snyder and sophomore Terrence Trammell both won first place in the shot put and 60-meter hurdles, respectively, in the indoor championships March 5 and 6. In his already storied career, Trammell has set numerous precedents for future hur_J dlers, and this season has been no exception. In his next meet following the championships, he broke the record of gold medalist ei Allen Johnson in the 110 hurdles by 1/10 of a second. itched in years k ratings CBS might have also been hurt by ; years in other factors. A GREAT ROOM, A/ AND GREAT ^ NA SPORTS in action The Lady Gamecock squad comes to the meet fresh off three wins at the Raleigh Relays last weekend. The team of Mikele Barber, Demetria Washington, Ellakisha Williamson and Melisa Barber won both the 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 200-meter relays, setting NCAA provisional marks in both. They also won the 4 x 400-meter relay, with the team of Mikele Barber, Tacita Bass, Washington and Char Foster. The women have also faired well in the shot put, discus and javelin throw this season. Michelle Fournier, Alana Robinson and Candy Mitchell, respectively, give USC the edge in those events. Softball The Lady Gamecock softball team is also in action this weekend. The women will host the Kentucky Wildcats in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader Friday night. This will be Carolina's first home SEC series of the year. USC is 31-8 overall, 5-2 in the SEC, while the Wildcats are 16-22 overall, with only one conference win in four games played. The USC women are coming off a sweep of conference foe Ole Miss last weekend, where they won 6-5 and 11-2. That series moved USC to the No. 10 rank in the nation. One reason the Lady Gamecocks have been so successful is their outstanding pitching staff. The position of staff ace has been claimed by freshman Megan Matthews, who's 18-6 with an ERA of 1.34 and has 172 strikeouts. Sam Russian has a team-low 1.02 ERA and is 2-0. \ THE REVEREND O.
