Dale Signature Regnier reigr by Emily Gifford m* Staff Writer _ As the only senior on the Lady Gamecocks tennis team, Celine Regnier is a good role model for her fellow teammates on the court. Named to thaSEQ.Academic.Honor Roll two years in a row, she is also a good role model off the court. Regnier began playing tennis after learning the sport from her father. Growing up in France, she had the opportunity to play in many tournaments and reached the semifinals of the Cadets Master International Tournament while playing junior tennis. She has been successful in her three here at Carolina. As a freshman, she played the No. 2 position for most of the season, and had an 8-5 record against SEC opponents. She ended the season with a solid 18-12 mark. tier sophomore year saw Kegnier break into the national rankings. She doesn't want to turn pro; instead, she wants to travel and maybe go to school. "I just don't know yet," she said. Her focus now, though, is on the success of the Lady Gamecocks. Looking at this season, she cites Georgia, Kentucky, Lousiana State and Vanderbilt as some of the toughest matches for both her and the team. After finishing 12-12 last year, the Lady Gamecocks look to improve their record and earn a good ranking. "I think we have a good enough team to [rank in the top 10] this year," Regnier said. "Because this is my last year, the top 10 is my goal." As for personal rankings, Regnier is aiming "for the best possible one." As with her French male counterpart on the men's team, Jerome Jourdan, Regnier is more fo cused on the ranking ot the entire team than her individual ranking. Her ranking will improve, however, if she keeps up the level of play she showed in the fall. Regnier made it to the quarterfinals of the Rolex Region II Championships, losing to an opponent who would make it to the national tournament. Her most recent match was against Furman, one of the Lady Gamecocks' Region II competitors. Opening the season in the No. 1 spot on the team, Regnier won easily with a score of 6-4,6-1 against the Paladins' Megan Dunigan. If you try to tell Regnier thats she is a remarkable example of the balance between excellent tennis and good academics, however, she becomes shy and cites the team and her coach, Arlo Elkins, for helping her succeed. Elkins is counting on Regnier's experience to help the team become one of the top squads in the nation. "We look for her to be at the top of the lineup this year, like last year," Elkins said. With Regnier leading the way, and the support of a strong team, the Lady Gamecocks are looking for a solid finish. "This is my last semester, and I want to play the best tennis possible," Regnier said. If history is any indication, the Lady Gamecocks, and especially Regnier, will have a great season. The Lady Gamecocks, ranked No. 21 in the nation, take to their home courts at 1 p.m. Sunday against Kentucky, a strong SEC opponent.
