righted himself, and pressed on
stronger than ever.
Today Rogers is a hard-working
family man whose life serves as an
inspiring counterpoint to so many of
the negative perceptions we hold
about superstar athletes.
So, needless to say, when the story
broke last week that the universifv

Street to build a new dormitory,
many USC fans felt like they were
losing a special friend.
You can call it sentimental, wistful,
nostalgic, even downright pathetic,
but for some reason, this action
bothers people.
Now, no one will dispute the point
that USC is in desperate need of additional
housing for its students.
The fact students need a new
dorm at all is a positive sign, indicating
the university is fulfilling its mission
and providing more students
with an education.
It's hard to argue against such
progress, especially when it involves
the future of so many young people.
East Quad, as the new dorm will be
called, will certainly help ease the
strain on the school's growing waiting
list for on-campus housing. I've

"A lot of people contributed and I
think Kinloch gave us some great minutes
with two baskets," Fogler said.
Then, with 8:33 left in the second
half, history was made.
McKie's driving, spinning layup not
only put USC ahead 52-44, but also
gave McKie 1,973 career points, breaking
the 23-year-old school record.
However, the record-breaking shot
itself may have been overshadowed by
what happened immediately afterward.
The referees were supposed to stop
the game so McKie could be honored.
Instead, what took place was nothing
short of confusing.
"I was just blank," McKie admitted.

heard it's going to be nice, shrimpcolored
stucco, too.
Yet, in the initial clamor over the
mural's demise, it soon became clear
that unless USC came up with a plan
to reproduce it (or at tne very least,
create an equally inspiring substitute),
amateur Michaelangelos were
going to take to that new stucco
faster than the USCPD could say
"Sistene Chapel."
But this debate has spawned
much more talk than just that of
picking a worthy substitute.
In deciding the fate of this nearsacred
relic of Gamecock athletics, it
has also uncovered a serious deficiency
in the university's athletic department
? a complete lack of historical
unity.
Now, while IH be the first to admit
USC doesn't have much to 'crow'
about historically, it does seem the
limited supply of hardware and nostalgia
pieces we've been able to accrue
over a century of competition
should be able to fit under one roof.
Who knows?
If we had a nice enough shrine to
display our spoils, it might encourage
our athletes to work harder to pick
up some more.
As it stands now, though, you'd

McKie himself called a 20-second
timeout and order was restored.
After the presentation, William Gallman
took control for USC, scoring six
straight points.
With 6:34 left in the game, McKie
threw aii alley-oop pass that Gallman
managed to control and lay in the
basket.
Then, after two whole minutes of
scoreless play, Gallman added a tap-in

with a slam dunk.

Look, BJ McKie broke Alex English's

hi all seriousness, however, the
university is making the right (albeit
painful) decision by tearing down the
