That youthfulness was evident as the Gamecocks lost for the first time of the season, falling 88-73. Despite a career-high 32-point outburst from junior Annie Lester, Susan Walvius' USC squad (5-1, 0-1) could not overcome 24 turnovers and poor inside defense. LSU shot a stunning 53 percent from the floor, capitalizing on open shots from inside the paint. USC struggled with stepping up to stop the Tiger attack, allowing numerous uncontested Tiger layups. Walvius attributes that to inexperience, but she expects improvement further into the season. "Many of the times it was a rookie over there," Walvius said. "They're stepping up, but just not in the right way." That, in addition to LSU's ability to score 30 points off USC turnovers spelled the difference in the game. However, Walvius is not hanging her head afA A A< f i 'At. . J A ler siarcmg conierence piay wiin a aeieai. Tm actually encouraged by some of the things I saw. Despite some letdowns, I saw a lot of potential there. I believe in our ability; we're relying a lot on freshmen, and they will get there. If you throw out all of the poor decisions we made offensively. If we fix the defense and fix the rebounding, well be a contender in the SEC," she said. LSU was led in scoring by junior Katrina Hibbert, who tallied 25 points on 11 of 12 shooting. The Lady Tigers had four players score double figures. USC got off to a strong start, taking an early 20-12 lead in the opening 10 minutes. However, LSU stepped up the defense, holding USC without a point for three minutes. In that time, LSU powered the ball inside, going on a 13-0 run. LSlFs Clemson c; about new ASSOCIATED PRESS All ov ed about 1 CLEMSON, S.C. ? The second half was much of the same, as LSU continued to send the ball inside for easy looks at the basket. USC had equally golden opportunities, but the Gamecocks shot just 42 percent from the field. USC missed key chances to cut into the Lady Tiger lead, misfiring on several open looks. The margin got as close as nine midway through the second half, but USC would get no closer. Lester did all she could to change the Gamecock fortunes, adding 11 rebounds with her 32 points, but her record night wasn't enough. "They just took off in the second half and never looked back," said Lester of the LSU performance. "We just didn't get back on defense." Freshman Shaunzinski Gortman pitched in 12 points to the USC effort. Any chance of a USC comeback ended with the difference at the foul line. LSU shot 77 percent (20/26) from the charity stripe while USC could knock down only 47 percent (9/19). As for the bright spots, USC was very impressive on the boards, pulling down 40 rebounds, one more than LSU. Nineteen were of the offensive variety, as USC converted for those opportunities for 22 second-chance points. Continued development from the freshmen, as well as Lester's strong inside presence, should leave the Lady Gamecocks in good shape when the bulk of the SEC calendar rolls around Walvius is optimistic about where her team goes from here. "We've got something to work with now. We've got some game tape, and we'll learn more from this game than anything we've done thus far," she said. tt i tto/-?_<. .4. r up iicAi, uov> steps uut ui cumei enee letting UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. Saturday at Frank McGuire Arena. impus exci football co er campus, people are excit- Thompson, an assis :he prospects of making Clem- em Mississippi, competitive. Baseball field to be renovated asst. sports editor KELLY MAGU1RE USC announced plans for renovating Sarge Fiye Field, home of the Gamecock baseball team. Tbe renovations began a year ago, with a new locker room, player's lounge and an extended home dugout. Athletics Director Mike McGee said that each year Carolina intends to improve the facility "as quickly and prudently as possible." The renovations should be completed by Jan. 15 ? in time for the 1999 baseball season. Improvements in the seating area have begun with sand-blasting and waterproofing the concrete areas. This technique gives the concrete a new look which lasts for years. Also, 1800 individual chairs will be installed in the first 12 rows. Fans can buy a chair for a one-time donation of $100, which includes a nameplate on the individual chair and one season ticket per chair purchased. The name of the purchaser will be placed on the chair for as long as the seating exists. If the order is received by Dec. 21, the names will be arranged in alphabetical order; otherwise the names will be placed according to the date the orwae rprpivaH Anv fan wVm hnvs fivp or more chairs will receive a USC baseball jacket. Head coach Ray Tanner said the new facility should make a difference in recruiting top-notch players. Tanner also said the team's postseason benefits could be helped because the selection committee looks at a team's facilities, along with its record, in determining hosts for the regkmals. rer politics of "Illegal use of the hands on the kicking team.
