About 12 million Americans will sit down to a turkey-free Thanksgiving this year. And with the health-food industry's ever-increasing popularity, more options than ever are available to those who want to forego the fowl. Why do it? Why give up meat this Turkey Day? Some people disagree with a meatbased diet because of religious or ethical reasons. Others decide to cut out their carnivorous entrees for the environment's sake. However, the largest number of new vegetarians are giving up meat because of the health implications. According to the Vegetarian Research Group, organizations that support a primarily plant-based diet include the National Research Council, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society. In a statement, the American Dietetic Association said, "Appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, are nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention in treatment of certain diseases." Author John Robbins said the average American eats enough meat in his or her lifetime to sustain a small farm.
