The acting Student Body President Jamel Franklin had impeachment charges brought against him for firing the Elections Committee. Franklin believed they had violated the SG constitution. Franklin was spared being ousted from office, but the impeachment procedure came under heavy scrutiny. Student Body Treasurer Suzanne Newman was quoted in the March 20,1998 issue of The Gamecock. calling the impeachment, "a fiasco and a mockery of Student Government, its processes, the impeachment process and the entire thing." Now, with last week's Senate meeting at which Newman and Community Service Director Blakely Hallman apologized for wrongdoings, the pot is brewing again. It seemed that with this meeting, Hallman and Newman's wrongdoings would be simply brushed under the rug, like a pile of dirt you didn't want mom to see, State rival pointless Since the sea- E7T sons for both Carolina and Clemson urda have unfolded as against complete embar- VtTTFTi rassments, ifs been really interesting Beating Cc when people have prove a tl. argued who was go- still a be in? t.n win. Both L o teams have been so abysmal it's hard to say who's worse. But as the yearly battle for "Best in South Carolina" becomes the fight for worst in the Palmetto State, we want to ask if it's even worth it. Not to say we don't have faith in our team's ability, because we do. What we lack is a respect for Clemson. In a state of mediocre universities with underachieving football teams, the boys from the upstate have us beat hands down. Let's face it. With the Senate having impeachment fever last semester and being so willing to go through with the process, it's good to see that they are being consistent in their actions in giving this incident consideration. It might be tough for some of the senators because they all work together, and some might be in other university organizations, thus forming personal bonds. So it's refreshing to see that they will put aside these personal ties and act in a justified and professional manner at this meeting. Though this situation is only in the investigative stages, it's important that it be handled in an even-handed manner. Student Government is showing that they will abide by the rules and do what is necessary to maintain a valid and justified organization. ry utterly this year na doesn't have a , , ^ winning football ys contest traditioBn Wve the Tigers. had some good rrrnTyTTj^M teams and good seasons, but when irolina ivon't you think of great ring-ive're programs, you tterschool. think of Clemson.
