USC President John Palms and
the 2001 Bicentennial Committee
gathered among distinguishecT faculty
members and student leaders
Wednesday on the Horseshoe to
launch the most ambitious bicentennial
celebration ever planned.
"The university was established
as the nation's first true public state
university, and we want to make that
known to the rest of the nation
through the events involved with the
celebration," Palms said.
The $50,000 appropriation to
establish a college in Columbia in
1801 stated from the beginning
that USC would be controlled by the
state legislature and would allow all
"youth [to be] educated... in the good
order and the harmony of the whole
community."

"I think pretty much everyone

"I know they definitely regret what
they did. Of course, as Student Government

what they did.
"I personally don't think any fiirther
action needs to be taken."
Dickerson, who appointed Hallman,
is not sure what the outcome

"Senate does not have a position

Cavanaugh wants this to be the first
of many Ethical Leadership Conferences
at USC.
"We're trying to focus on and target
leadership on campus," Cavanaugh
said. "What I would like to do is set

maybe every semester, as a culmination
of projects and this class."
Thompson and Colburn had one
message for "Generation Xers" ? to listen
to one's cor science and make decisions
based on what is right, not on
the opinions of others.
"Make your own decisions," Thompson
said. "There was a lot of peer pressure
that day [March 16,1968]. Everyone
has a heart, and 99 percent of the
time it's right. Listen to it."
