Head Coach Eddie Fogler and
his basketball squad officially
stopped scrimmaging each other to
take on one of the hardest schedules
in NCAA basketball, when the
Gamecocks took on Marathon Oil
in an exhibition game Tuesday
night at Frank McGuire Arena.
The Gamecocks looked sharp
against their opponent in their first
match-up of the season, winning
decisively, 74-677The win avenged
last year's-76-63 setback to
Marathon.

up after the departure of George
Formanek, Ryan Stack and Melvin
Watson.
The Gamecocks went with an
experienced starting line up that
included Herbert Lee Davis, Bud
Johnson, B.J. McKie, Hagen Rouse
and LeRon Williams.
Williams stepped up to center
court for the opening tip, won it,
lost it, and finally stole it back.
Williams then sprinted down court
and on a pass from McKie, scored

own7as Rouse drained a 20foot
three pointer to give USC a
5-3 lead. Three pointers were in the
Gamecocks' arsenal as three Carolina
players completed the long
ball: Davis, Rouse and David Ross.
Davis was 3-for-4, Ross l-for-5 and
Rouse 2-for-4.
Less than five minutes into the
game, two of Carolina's new crop
entered the line up. Damien Kinloch
and Aaron Lucas each added
their own flare to the eame as Kin
loch was 2-for-2 at the free throw
line and was the leading freshman
scorer with 12 points.

"I got a couple easy looks under
the hole; got a couple of good passes,"
Kinloch said. "I felt I did alright."
Lucas played a total of 23 minutes,
which tied him with McKie,
and at the 11:21 mark in the first
half, Lucas added two points on a
driving lay-up.
"He's [Lucas] the one freshman
right now who's physically tough
enough," Fogler said.
Within the first eight minutes,
all the freshmen had received playing
time, with the addition of Jamel
Bradley and Tony Kitchings.
During the game, every single
Gamecock scored with the exception
of the injured Antonio Grant.
Grant attempted to play in the first 1
half, but two minutes proved to be
too much for him, so he sat out the
rest of the game.
"I could see right away that it I
still bothered him," Fogler said. 1
Grant will be unable to play
in Carolina's upcoming trip to In- L
diana this weekend.
"That will hurt our team this
weekend, but that's part of the
game," Fogler said.
Carolina went into halftime
with a two-point lead, after a
last-second attempt by Marathon <
failed.

Carolina for the second half. The
first shot of the half sealed
Marathon's fate, as Davis cata- ,
pulted one in for three. Two min- |
utes later, Davis hit another shot ;
from downtown.
Although McKie contributed i
only three points to the total score <
(all on free throws), he led the team

McKie said he has confidence ,
in his teammates to score the 1
points,even if he doesn't have any j
opportunities.
"It's better for them to take an
open shot than for me to take a I
