The tragedy of the loss of human life is lamented, and then the blame begins. All anti-abortion activists are implicated by pro-abortion pundits. They say that speaking against abortion, a right guaranteed by the First Amendment, creates a "climate" conducive to abortion violence. It is absurd to blame innocent activists for the conduct of extremists. If there is any "climate" being created, it is one of animosity between pro- and anti-abortion factions when unfounded blame is placed on the latter. This animosity reduces the chances of a compromise being reached, which is intentional. The media covers each incident obsessively, as though there aren't other incidences of violence occurring all over the country. This over-emphasis on abortion violence does two things?one intentional, i.i i.i i me umer uy ueiauit. First, it convinces the average media consumer that abortion violence is committed and condoned by the average anti-abortion activist, which is of course absurd. The walls have been painted with special paint that lightens the place, and police supposedly patrol the garages. But that doesn't keen neonle from committing crimes there. Supposedly, one should be able to turn around any place on campus and see a security alarm, but they are often hard to find. There are just as many problems during the daylight hours. USC needs to reroute traffic. Many cities have bike lanes. It is likely they are attracted to the prospect of committing abortion violence because they want to become celebrities. Nuts commit high-profile crimes to get attention. They do it for their screwedup conceptions of glory. Eric Rudolph's case underscores this possibility. He allegedly not only bombed an abortion clinic, but planted a bomb at the Atlanta Olympics as well. Surely the Olympics had nothing to do with abortion; the man just has a sick need for attention. Every time the media runs stories like this into the ground, more crazies are encouraged to commit the acts that will get the most attention. Abortion violence would occur far less if the perpetrators were not reinforced by the media. s attention j^SjjjSSFj the road more safely. This will help campus planners know where to install crosswalks and sidewalks. The campus is going to get more congested, and the USC architects should keep this in mind when planning new facilities. The more students have to cross busy intersections like Assembly and Blossom, the more chance there is tor danger, remaps witn tfte addition of more patrol cars, more call boxes and more pedestrian bridges, students would feel a little safer using campus services after dark.
