No one can pay in euros yet, and their exact weight the present currency will not be exactly known until the ball drops on New Year's Eve. Also, no one will be able to buy euros at the bank until 2002, when coins and bank notes will begin circulating. Yet, stocks and bonds will trade and be set in euro, and workers at multinational companies will receive denominated checks in euros. Economically, this might be burdensome and could cause some economic problems for some of the 11 countries that might not be totally prepared for the change, but symbolically, this is quite an eyeopener. Some of the many things that have been overlooked are issues relating to minorities and groups lower in socioeconomic scale. When they came to campus Tuesday, representatives of both Beasley and Hodges focused on a lot of the tired old ideas we've been hearing all fall. Just like most political issues, the lottery and its effect on education isn't cut and diy. This is especially true in relation to the state's rural black population. Rural schools in South Carolina are some of the worst in the state.
