VVl matter vulgar, sexist To the Editor This letter is in response to the absolutely disgusting and sexist remarks Shawn Singleton regularly includes in his columns. I am amazed that the gutter language he uses in his writings makes its way into the school newspaper, and I am calling for his resignation immediately. In his last two articles he has used the term "vermin" to describe women six different times. Vermin are defined as "objectionable animals such as cockroaches or lice" and can also be defined as "an obnoxious person," but I think Mr. Singleton prefers the former. He even refers to his mother as "vermin." Maybe he was left on a doorstep when he was born or not held enough. Who cares? This attitude is inexcusable and very unprofessional. He also seems a bit jealous of the fact that women can pick and choose who they go home with. For obvious reasons, it appears they don't go home with him. Wo ic ton Vincv nr nHcoccoH in tollincr them "all they want is dollar bills" or they get into bars "by wearing short tight skirts." Yet he still wants to put his picture with the NITRO girls in the paper? What about the "poor slobs they have no intention of sleeping with?" Get over it. Lastly, for some reason he still hasn't recovered over the fact that Brett Favre is arrogant. Maybe he is arrogant because he has won Super Bowls and has been the MVP. What is the reason Mr. Singleton is arrogant and sexist towards women? Paul D. Roof Graduate Student Football team gets unnecessary perks To the editor, Ahh, Gamecock football. Don't you love it! Actually, no, how can you stand it? As a USC athlete, student and peer of football players my disgust with the program grows with each passing day. They are the most well treated team and the prize of the athletic depart MflB i d he 2SO-300 words and must include full name, professional title or year ed by the author to The Gamecock newsroom in Russell House loom Mi. cock reserves the right to edit all letter for style, possible libel or space limment, yet they are 1-6 and 0-5 in the SFr TViaf ic roallv oomofViinor ko proud of. What are they using their 80+ full scholarships on? Water boys? Now my complaint is two fold; How can a team, as poor as ours walk around the place as if they own it and why should other sports teams suffer because of them? Now as an athlete, there is the Academic Enrichment Center to make sure that USC athletes are maintaining the student part of student-athletes. Now this place in generally quiet and quietness is enforced there until the football players arrive. Then your studying is ruined by the constant "what up dog" and "yo, G, what you doing" and "chillin" that is put up with from only the rulers of the school, the football players. Now this is another classic football story. While I was lifting, I actually saw Brad Scott pull a football player aside to talk to him about his grades. Well, that is what it looked like anyway. It turned out that these football : players athletic academic adviser happened to be there and that the adviser got yelled at by Mr. Scott about his football player not making good grades. These athlete are not held accountable for anything! Not for their actions on the field or in the classroom. It is always someone else's responsibility to do things for them. I just don't understand this. Our athletic department says that the ratio male athletes andfemale athletes must equal the male to female ratio of the University. So there are 53 percemt women and 47 percent men on this campus. The athletic department is striving to have the total athlete ratio to represent this as well. The problem comes in with the football team. There is not a sport for women that can balance out football. To compensate for this lack of balance other men's teams get cut. My team has to sacrifice depth and legitimate talent for a bunch of gorillas bringing up the rear in the SEC. This is perfectly understandable, foot Dan is a revenue sport. And how about those guys that my team sacrificed for this week? Why are we babying such a bunch of losers? Why do we walk around pretending that our football players are good with they are pitiful. Why do we give them all this special treatment? The article discussed seven herbal preparations as "common herbals relating to stress and it's effects", which may have led readers that all were calming or cognition-enhancing products. In fact, one herbal remedy that was listed, Ma Huang (Ephedra), is a stimulant that contains ephedrine and psueioephedrine and closely resembles amphetamines. This is a potentially dangerous substance for which the FDA has proposed strict controls. The controls were proposed in response to more than 800 reports of adverse effects associated with the product ? including more than 40 deaths.
