Herbs offe
staff writer AMANDA PRESLEY [
Sophomore Olivia Gillcrese suffers from migraine
headaches because of it. Other students
are afflicted by digestive problems, sleep deprivation
or weakening of the immune system.
As midterms again approach, the stress of
school rears its ugly head.
One way to fight stress would be to stay
home and sleep on exam days. Although this
idea is appealing, a better answer for both
students and their grades could be to try herbal
remedies.
Herbs have been around for thousands of
years. Ancient Eastern cultures used herbal
remedies to combat almost every ailment their
people faced.
Westerners learned how to use herbs from
these cultures, and Western doctors supported
the use of herbs in medicine until manmade
drugs rose to fame around the 1930s. ^
Glenda Ford, an employee at 14 Carrot Whole (
Foods on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia,
thinks herbs hold many benefits for college \
students. ? 1
First, they're affordable. Most herbs cost no i
more than $20 for about 100 capsules. 1
Second, they're easy to purchase. Prescrip
tion drugs require a doctor's approval, and that 1
means time and money at the doctor's office. '
The best part about herbs, though, is how
easy they are to take.

Herbs come in different forms. Capsules or
tablets require the least amount of work. Although
these forms are the two that might be
most associated with medicine, herbs can be
taken in other ways.
A tincture is an herb extracted into a liquid
Form. This process uses alcohol, and the herb is
stored in either an alcohol or glycerin base.
It's best to mix tinctures with juice or tea,
since the taste isn't always pleasant.

The last way to take herbs is by making a
tea out of them. Manufacturers of tea blends
combine the active herb with other spices and
herbs to create drinks that are both medicinal
and tasteful.
If herbs sound interesting, then go to a
health-food store. The employees there should
be knowledgeable about which herbs are effective
for stress, and should be able to identify
the good and bad points about each herb.
Here's a list of some common herbs relating
to stress and its effects.

Although a little description about each herb
follows, make sure to take the time to learn
about them before popping open a bottle. It
might also be a good idea to check with a physician
before starting on an herb, especially if
you're on any prescription medication.
Kava kava's benefits have been compared
with Valium, although it comes without the
harmful side effects. Kava is supposed to relax
the mind and body. It has been used for anxiety,
depression, insomnia and stress disorders.
High doses have been shown to cause drowsiness.
St Johnswort, named after John the Baptist,
contains hypericin. This chemical has antidepressant
properties, and it's supposed to behave
as an MAO inhibitor. St. Johnswort is used
to promote an overall feeling of wellness, and
some people take it as a mood elevator. It can
take several weeks to work, and it causes heightened
sim sensitivity in some cases.
Ginkgo biloba is the oldest surviving tree
on Earth. It has been used by the Chinese to
counteract the effects of aging. It has shown
promising results as a memory enhancer, main
ly because it increases blood flow to the brain.
It's also given to people who have had strokes
or who suffer from heart disease.
Ginseng has been used as everything from
an aphrodisiac to a memory aid. Most people
. use it for energy enhancement. There are three
kinds: American, Korean and Siberian. All display
the same properties. Ginseng is supposed
to counteract fatigue without caffeine. It has alpickin'

Ephedra, or Ma Huang, was introduced
to the Mormons in 1847 by Native Americans
living in Utah. It became popular because its
stimulating effects mimicked those of caffeine,
which the Mormons didn't use. Ephedra
is used as a decongestant, energy enhancer and
diet product. It increases the metabolic rate,
and it elevates blood pressure. Do not take this
herb with caffeine. Avoid ephedra if you have
high blood pressure or heart problems.
Valerian root is characterized by its awful

main ingredient in more than 100 German sleep
aids today. The valepotriates, valerian's sedative
chemicals, supposedly encourage sound
sleep without causing morning grogginess.
Echinacea doesn't fight stress, but it's
used to boost the immune system. Immune-system
function is often compromised during stressful
times. It was popular among the Native
American Plains Indians. Echinacea mimics the
body's defense system by releasing interferon,
a chemical that virus-infected cells give off to
aid other white blood cells.
