Singleton: Take hark our sports " ^?31^ shawn SINGLETON good mood singleton 5:16 this week and you might end up a victim to my assassins. I was at the liquor store last week when I watched the one-game Wild Card playoffbetween the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants. I noticed they played the game at Wrigley Field instead of "Commercial" Stick (I mean, 3Com) Park. I found it perfectly fitting that the fifth such playoff in Major League history was played in one of the last of the grand old ballparks instead of some commercialized stadium, r?r> rl L*r maay\1a nrl> a lr?% ati* act cuiu aticuucu uy pcupic wiiu iuiuw as much about baseball as Monica Lewinsky knows about knee pads. Professional sports has been commercialized in the last five years. Cornerstones of sports have either been replaced or renamed by corporate interests. Chicago Stadium has been replaced by the United Center. The Spectrum in Philadelphia has been replaced by the Core States Center, which was then renamed First Union Arena. The legendaiy Boston Garden has been replaced by the Fleet Center. And in the most insulting of these experiments in idiocy, Le Forum du Montreal has been replaced by the Molson Centre. Now don't get me wrong, Molson is a beer consumed on many occasions at the liquor store, but don't name your stadium after it. Some of these name changes are just plain stupid. Joe Robbie Stadium was renamed Pro Player Park because Jimmy Johnson signed a contract with them. Tampa Stadium was renamed Houlihan's Stadium even though at the time, there were no Houlihan's restaurants in Tampa. The worst name change yet has to be the June replacement of Anaheim Stadium with Edison International Field. What is Edison International, please tell me? Even NASCAR, the No. 1 sport of all rednecks, isn't safe from this travesty. Thank God the tobacco bill didn't get passed because who else would have sponsored the races? Since commercialization has become the norm, let's bring more women into the sport. Let's rename the Southern 500 the Victoria's Secret 500, sponsored by Tampax. Or better yet, let's rename the Daytona 500 the Pantene 500, sponsored by WonderBra. Just so there are no references to me as being sexist, a woman helped me come up with the names. As true fans of all sports, we need to take our sports back from these corporate raiders. Even though the days of Griffith Stadium, the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field are gone, I don't think the fans that attended games there i r_j_j i. j.I Ll.1. nave iaueu away into me ruuuie. We need to fight for the sports we hold dear, whether it be football, baseball, hockey or even Nasty-Car, for if we don't, our children will have nothing to hold onto in the next millenium.
