"I commend Senator Frick," he said. "We are here to voice the opinions of students. I like the crossword puzzle resolution. It may seem silly, but I've heard a lot of people say they want it j more often." The Gamecock's Editor in Chief Jennifer Stanley said she has never re5 ceived a complaint about the lack of crossword puzzles. "I find it hard to believe that crossword puzzles determine the quality of a newspaper," Stanley said. Stanley also claimed that Frick never contacted her about the resolution. "I think the senate should know that a government body can't determine what a newspaper can do," she said. Sen. Kathy Van Nostrand, who also works in Student Media creating ads and helps decide when the crossword puzzles are printed in The Gamecock, said limited space often is a determining factor. "It depends on ad space," she said. "When the paper has limited space, the first thing to go is usually the crossword puzzle or the comics." Gathering fosters prayer, diversity PROMISE continued from page I "The message that Coach McCartney delivers and that Promise Keepers delivers is iust tremendous." "It changes many men's lives," said Barclay Radebaugh, assistant basketball coach and FCA advisor at USC. He attended a Promise Keepers rally in Knoxville, Tenn. and plans to be at Williams-Brice this weekend. Freshman Loren Rodgers attended a Promise Keepers rally in Jacksonville, Fl., and plans to attend the one at Williams-Brice with his dad. "Being there just makes you feel like you aren't alone," Rodgers said. "If s not about pride in being men. You've got this whole stadium of guys, and they're crying, and there's a lot of worship and praying." Freshman Trey Kelly heard about this weekend's rally from a friend at his church in Florence. He attended a Promise Keepers rally in Charlotte in the past and plans to go to WilliamsBrice with his friends. "It's really cool because guys put away their personas, and everyone just opens up and worships God," Kelly said. More than 3 million men have filled stadiums for Promise Keepers rallies across the country since the first Promise Keepers rally brought together 4,200 men n July 1991 in Boulder, Colo. Promise Keepers is a national organization based in Boulder that "encourages men to five godly lives and to keep seven basic promises of commitment to God, their families and fellow man." It is not only a series of stadium events but serves as a year-round outreach to men through educational seminars, resource materials such as books and tapes and local churches. Promise Keepers stresses the importance of men maintaining small group meetings within their local church in addition to attending stadium rallies. Over the years, the organization has stirred controversy with several issues, one of which is race relations. "I will definitely be attending," said Jeff Coefield, business manager at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Columbia. "Several members went to one last year and brought back a lot of good information." "I believe that the whole theme behind the rally in Washington last year was breaking down racial and denominational walls, Rodgers said. "They were unified in Christ, not in race." Step event encourages unity STEP continued from page 1 "This is not just for black people or minorities,'' Richardson said. "AAAS is one of the largest organizations on this campus. We are for everybody." Jerry Brewer, director of student life, is pleased with the program. "This is an excellent opportunity to showcase African-American culture and history," Brewer said. "You learn a lot by helping somebody, and you learn a lot about yourself. I think this event says a lot about the organizations involved. It speaks well of them," Brewer said. "This is education in its truest form: research, teaching and public services," Brewer said. "I want people to witness the unity that is present when a group of people get together to do something positive," Reed said.
