What began as an investigation into the Whitewater dealings has turned into a 400-page report on the President's sex life, or rather his sexual escapades. The past seven months have been like a whirlwind for this country. We are being forced to face our national dirty laundry, and decide what the limits are to a person's private life, even if that person is our president. Clinton has changed in our eyes as well. We knew that he had a history of extra-marital affairs and possible sexual-harassment incidents. But we thought this was all behind him, and he was governing our nation while being faithful to his wife. But now we have the proof that this is not the case. And we are being forced to decide whether these actions and what the president has done to cover them up are grounds for impeachment. If all that is in that report is true, it could be very well be grounds for impeachment. Then the country would be dragged into another a year of impeachment proceedings before we would ever decide whether Clinton should be removed from office. The country does not need this, President Clinton does not need it, nor does his family. Most people will admit that the past seven months has been hard enough. We know what he did, and we forgive him for it. For the good of the country Clinton should step down. Since January he has had a very hard time running this country. Every decision, every action is questioned. Our president needs i i i. _ . to De someone we can trust, so when he makes the tough decisions, like whether to bomb terrorist camps, we don't question him at every turn. For every American 40 or over, Watergate is still in recent memory. And the painful ordeal that was the Watergate hearings now looms over our heads once again. President Clinton needs to realize that it is not about saving his reputation. The lack of possible government action for the upcoming months cannot even be blamed on the Republicans. President Clinton has lost his own party's faith. And that is unacceptable for the head of our government. We need someone we trust sitting in the oval office. Our economy is relatively stable and there is peace in most of the world. But issues in the Middle East and economic problems in Asia mean things could change at any moment. It's during times of crisis when we need a competent chief executive the most. If a major crisis were to occur right now, would Clinton have the trust of the country and the rest ot the government to act in our best interests? Probably the one good thing that has come out of this process is how we are deciding, as a country, how much respect we will have for private lives. This is a discussion we, as Americans, need to have. But it does not need to occur during a lengthy impeachment process. For the good of the country and the good of his family, President Clinton needs to step down. This is not a judgement on his actions, but in his ability, or soon to be inability, to govern. In the current state of affairs, Clinton cannot perform his prescribed duties as the President of the United States. President Clinton has always been worried about the legacy he will leave to this country. Our geographical proximity to Texas and Florida means more of these Latin American immigrants coming right here to South Carolina. In the past couple of years, there has been a backlash to this immigration in California, with their measures against affirmative action, bilingual education and welfare benefits. Politicians around the country are continually talking about a "get tough" policy on immigration. In California and Texas a candidate's stand on the issue is one of the major parts of their platform. While people may recognize the millions of legal Latin American immigrants that have entered our country and are now citizens and positive contributors to our society, they say the real problem is illegal immigrants: those who sneak across our borders to leach off of our welfare system and take jobs away from U.S. citizens. But many of these immigrants are coming because it's so easy to find a job. Certain U.S. businesses prefer illegal immigrants because they will workfor lower wages and, because of the threat V J I It J * i i.ukI plume number ITk Many of the religions in the world today note the Bible as a revered book in which God used man to spread his word. We can look in disgust at the "dirty Mexicans" all we want, but the reality is that these are poor people who are happy to take the wages they can make here. Although there are certain measures we can take, this problem is never going to go away. We can't stop immigration from south of the border. Americans are going to have to face the reality of our place in this hemisphere. There's a marked tendency even in major American corporations, which view the country as one of the leading strategic markets of the world, to substitute Americans with qualified Russians. Significantly fewer women and men are interested in hanging out with Westerners just because they are Westerners. Although most white Americans identify more with Europe, in many ways we are more closely linked with Latin America. We were all once colonies of European powers, and all of us have tried, successfully or unsuccessfully, to govern ourselves over the past 200 years. While we continue to say our sole cultural heritage lies with countries 4,000 miles across an ocean, we must recognize our vital relationship to Latin America. This means recognizing the importance of Latin American people in our own country. Within the next few decades, people of a European heritage i will be in the minority in this country, and the most prominent "minority" will i be Hispanic Americans, not African ' Americans. So let's start to realize we can't five 1 in a bubble all our fives. We will always be a nation of immigrants. Our ances, tors were able to make their way here . and pursue the "American Dream."
