Senate meets to discuss plans for fall prk+v* /^vnf dClJLlCdlCl f asst. news editor KENLEY YOUNO Past achievements were discussed and new ideas for student services improvements were entertained Wednesday during the first Student Senate meeting of 1998. Student Body Vice President Chris Dorsel applauded senators for their accomplishments throughout last semester, and he encouraged them to continue their efforts. "You guys did a great job last semester. Because of you, our Clothes Drive was a success. "Student Senate was also largely responsible for getting the new Taco Bell on campus," Dorsel said. "We need to carry the same enthusiasm we had from last year into this one. Fm open to any suggestions." Several senators voiced their ideas and intentions for this semester. Academic Committee Chairman Kim Hartwell reported findings based upon advisement surveys that she and her committee issued earlier last semester. "About 607 of our surveys were returned. Surprisingly, 76 percent of students rated their advisement sessions as good to excellent. "However, 86 percent said that they would support campus-wide advisement training for all advisors," Hartwell said. Rules Committee Chairman Jonathan Sharpe suggested lobbying for longer breaks between classes. "I know many students, particularly first and second year journalism majors, who are having a hard time getting to class on time because those classes are spread so far apart over campus. "It would be nice if we could secure at least a 20-minute recess between all classes," Sharpe said. "Of course, this would take some time and a massive overhaul of university scheduling." Student Services Committee Chairman Leigh-Anne Travers mentioned i-i r : x me possiumiy ui securing a pusi unite in the Carolina Mall. "I want to see if there is any way that we can have a true postal representative in the bottom of the Russell House. Maybe then we can actually send large boxes or containers in the mail," Travers said. Dorsel urged senators to remain active and to continue brainstorming ideas for campus improvement. Absences on Wednesday included Senators Eric Cooper, Kayin Darby, Bryan May, W. Peter Wallace, Allen Brown, Arnold R. Dormer, HI, Shanika Washington, Lateca Wise, Scott Lucas, Courtney Stangry, Denisha Hendricks, and Rob Sprankle. Monday's article "Professors now l: 4 4. _ 4. : I suDjeei 10 icnurc review anu Wednesday's editorial "Post-tenure review could use a review" were incorrect. They should have said tenured professors will be reviewed every six years.
