LiUTH continued from page four
Natalie Merchant isnt the only
litith artist currently enjoying a sue
cessful CD. Queen Latrfah's latest,
Order in the Court, and its first single
"Bananas," is blazing up the hiphop
and R&B charts. Latifah's career
started in the late 80s as part of the
Native Tongue hip-hop family.
Her first CD, All Hail the Queen,
contained the female anthem "Ladies
First," a song that put Latifah an Hie
map. The Mow-up disc, Nature of a
Sista', further established her as one
of the most powerful female voices in
hip-hop.
Then, her career sky-rocketed
with the hit single "UNITY" (from
the album Black Keign), several popular
acting roles an the TV show
"Living Single" and several movies.
With Order in the Court, Latifah has
put her acting on hold and is touring
in support of the album.
No artist an Lihth, however, can
compare with Bonnie Raitt's brilliant
career. Many people might only know
her from her 1989 break-through CD,
Nidi of Time, but Raitt has had a
long track record of albums.

lowered by crane last week and will
take about 10 days to set.
Improvements to handicap accessibility
and seating are also being done.

heavily involved with construction projects
at USC.

reviews. Raitt has been a champion
for the blues, and is one of the most
famous singers of our time. She has a
lot of material to choose from for a live
show, and will defmetely put on a
good performance.
The second Lilith Fair stage features
up-and-coming artists. The best
of these is Holly McNariand, whose
two alhnms Sour Fie and stuff are
excellent releases. McNariand's songs
can be soothing, as in the ethereal
"Stormy" and "UFO," or angry, as in
the exploding song "Elmo" or "Twisty
Mirror." Her range should provide fro*
a thrilling live performance.
Iihth Fair *98 begins at 3:30 p.m.
at the Blockbuster Pavilion. Be sure
to get there early, because this show
should be a good one.
