And while this, in itself, is not "bad," it is a clear signal of a troubling change in Columbia's coffeehouse culture. Allow me to explain: Fm sitting in Caffe Espresso enjoying the company of a few friends when a counter person appears in front of me. He clears his throat and proclaims, "If you aren't going to buy something I am going to have to ask you to leave." At first, I was shocked ? what's his deal? But from the set petulant look on his face. I could tell he was quite serious. Unruffled, I said, "Okay," and started packing my bags. I had money, but there was nothing I wanted to buy. My reason for going there was in order to see what friends of mine still go to the place. My friend Rick gave me a dollar and told me to buy a cup of coffee. Imploringly, I looked around and asked, "Does anyone want a cup of coffee?" No one did. And this is how I came to be sitting here with a cup of untouched coffee. Everything went back to normal, but as the clouds from my coffee rose up to meet my unsmiling face, I started to steam. See, coffeehouses began as a place where revolutionaries met and discussed their ideas. Later, they became a place where artists exchanged ideas, a kind of microcosm bouncing creative energy and information off each other. Coffeehouses began as a place where people could meet away from frenzied public chaos. While no one could argue that a coffeehouse is not a business, no one could deny the social pull of coffeehouses. Deterioration of the social aspect of Caffe Espresso is as apparent as the empty chairs and empty tables that surround me. Caffe Espresso has taken for granted its audience: USC and high school students. Although other groups visit Caffe Espresso, students make up the bulk of its customers. Strip away the reason why students come, strip away your revenue. To be even clearer Establish gestapo purchasing clauses, diminish the social aspect and watch your business dwindle until there is no business at all. Since the social aspect that places likp Adriana's and Courtyard Coffeehouse depend on has now become absent from Caffe uojjicoou, mis reuucuon in me amount of business is the sole consequence. The concept of making each customer a paying customer is completely understandable to me. However, as understandable to Caffe Espresso is having your business patronized. Patronization is the way by which a business, any business, sells its goods. The concept goes something like this: the more people patronize your business, the more goods you sell. It works like dominoes ? one non-paying customer could mean at least five paying customers. You do the math. remaps Cane Cspresso believes it is doing itself a favor by making each person pay in order to socialize with his friends. But from what I see over my untouched coffee, this wasn't to be the case. All in all, I wish them well.
