The dream master: the Voice of the Gamecocks, Charlie McAlexander. The dream class: Journalism 463. Journalism 463, also known as Sports Broadcasting, will be taught this May for the first time ever by McAlexander and some of his fellow broadcasters from both local and national marl_.i_ sets. Not only is it a first for USC, but this class is also a first for any university in the Southeast. The class will meet Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Carolina Coliseum. McAlexander came to USC in 1995 ;o take over the radio play-by-play luties for football and basketball. He replaced Bob Fulton, who retired ifter 43 years of calling games for Car)lina. A native of Holly Springs, Miss., McAlexander is a graduate of Delta State University. Charlie "Mac" as lis fans call him, started his career in lackson, Miss., at Ole Miss in 1972. After four years at Ole Miss, he noved to Vanderbilt where he was the adio play-by-play voice there for 13 fears. While there, he served as sports director for WSM-TV and held the same losition for six vears at WLAC radio. In 1991 Charlie "Mac" moved to Kentucky, where he was the television alay-by-play commentator for Wildcat jasketball and football. While there, he dso hosted "The NCAA Today" for ESPN. McAlexander said he wanted to :ome to South Carolina when Fulton etired because he had called games lere earlier in his career and really iked the school. He also said that Pawley's Island vas a favorite vacation spot for his famly McAlexander and his wife, Betty, lave two daughters, Emily (25) and Carrie (21). Carrie is a student at USC.
