Eight years ago, Benedetto sold a piece he wrote, "Kid Mafia," to Fox. Unfortunately, Benedetto did not have someone to protect the movie for him, and significant changes occurred. As a result, it was never shown on television. Recently, a friend from Fox contacted him recalling his film from eight years ago. He sent them an idea of his, and they are looking it over now. He is optimistic about it. "They are clearly considering the project for a TV movie for Fox Network," he said. His idea was similar to that of Good Will Hunting. He utilized personal experience and transformed it into a nar rative. The main character in Benedetto's movie is a college student. "He is going to Yale, but he is an outsider socially," he said. "In order to make a name for himself, he makes people think he is a member of the mafia. Then he has trouble with the real mafia." Based on the play by Victor Hugo, the opera is the story of a hunchbacked court jester, Rigoletto, who plots the assassination of his master and rival, Duke of Mantua. His public position as a court jester and his private life as a father collide when he is cursed by the nobleman, Monterone, after mocking the nobleman's heartbreak over his daughter's infidelities with the Duke. There are two kinds of screenplays that Benedetto sees as most successful. Writers are typically successful when they can create something based on a personal vision, and when they can re-invent a genre. *Good Will Hunting is an example of a personal vision that the writers had," he said. The movie is an example of successful, original vision put into a real narrative fjprm. There is the presence of the "breaking away" paradigm in the movie. "It's a universal kind of story where the individual has to become his or her own person by breaking away from a controlling force of some kind," he said. In the movie, Matt Damon is loyal to his friends because they care about him. However, he must break away from them and find himself. *He has to come to certain realizations," Benedetto said. Face /Off is an example of a screenplay that re-invents a certain kind of genre. The movie is an action film that portrays the conflict of good vs. evil. However, there is a different element in the movie that had not existed before in an action movie. I I ra to stage ond half of the 19th century. Among his best known works are Rigoletto and La Traviata. Well known for character creation and original music, Verdi often tells of outcasts crushed by a brutal and narrow-minded society. Upon his death in 1901, Verdi became a diety in the operatic world, and many of his works immediately became part of standard repertory. USC opera director Talmage Fauntleroy directs Rigoletto, with USC professor Manuel Alvarez as a musical director and conductor of the USC opera orchestra. Although the production will be sung in Italian, English subtitles will be projected onto a screen above the stage. Donald Gray will play the role of Rigoletto. In the movie, the good guy takes on the identity of the bad guy, and vice versa. This had never been done before in an action movie. | "They are using the old formula and I adding something different to it," he said. 1 A successful screenplay has to tell a good story. But the real challenge of screenplay writing is having it noticed by someone in the business, Benedetto said. | Matt Damon and Ben Affleck had been working on Good Will Hunting for five years. At first, it was not recognized. However, the tables turned as [I they became known actors. They were able to get it to Robin Williams, who liked the script. "You take a vision and then add talents to bring it into further realization," a Benedetto said. He said movies usually attract people 15 to 25 years old. In Titanic there 1 is the story about a teen-age love built into the sinking of the great ship. He also predicts that there will be more stories like Good Will Hunting by young people coming out of college. ? With an offering of about five various flavors ranging from dark to raspjrry, Hops has a specialty all its own. Rumor has it that customers get free samples, but that has yet to be proven aring my two visits. Perhaps it's because of my under-21 looking face. How- ^ rer, our party did receive free sweet-glazed croissants. ^ The appetizers are large enough to serve as entrees. The best dish is the achos. If you plan on ordering a meal, share the starter with about two or iree others. The nachos, which include chili, cheese, sour cream, peppers ad olives, are just spicy enough. Nachos, potatoes skins, mozzarella sticks ad the usual are available for between $4 and $7. The featured steak comes with a salad and side, which is the diner's choice 'baked potato, black beans and rice and the other usual sides. The steaks ren't the tvnical drv. Ouincv's-like steak, but have the iuicv taste straight om the grill. The pork chops, which also include a salad and side, come topped off with mushroom -white-wine sauce that actually seems to melt in your mouth. ^ Other than steaks and ribs, Hops also has a large selection of sandwich- ^ 5 that includes barbequed chicken and hamburgers. All grilled entrees cost jtween $9 and $14. TTie sandwiches are priced between $6 and $9. Hops does offer call-ahead seating, but even with that, expect a wait of t least 30 minutes on the weekend. To make up for the wait, a waiter does ike drink orders and offer steak samples. The atmosphere is not one for a romantic date. Go with a large group. I ite Hops in between Quincy's and Outback. I still prefer Outback's Aus alian flavors and recipes. But for a change of pace, Hops is worth the ait. Hops is located off Harbison Boulevard near Home Depot in the old T oma- ^ > Rumba building.
