Wednesday, March 18,1998 Affirmative action not for filling quotas To the editor: This is in response to Ms. Emily Streyer's "clear and equivocal" view on Affirmative Action. Fll start my response off by asking the question, how can you have a 'clear and equivocal' view on something in which you don't even have a basic understanding as to why Affirmative Action is in place? The true purpose of Affirmative Action is not to fill some quota or to force diversity. The program was initiated to combat racism and sexism in Elections committee made wrong decision To the editor: After reading the article in The Gamecock concerning Student Government President Jamel Franklin, and his requested resignation by the | Elections Committee, I have a few statements of my own to make. First, the statement by the Elections Committee that "when a person is elected to a Student Government office they are elected to represent the whole student body." First of all, when I was recently elected to the Student Government as a Senator in the Col lege of Math and Science, I was not elected to represent the whole student body. My primary concern must be those students who are in the College of Math and Science. I was not elected by, nor do I represent, any other college at the University of South Carolina. Now, I understand that the major Student Government officers, namely the president, vice-president, and treasurer, must as a necessity listen to people from all colleges on campus, but the senators of Student Government are also elected officers, and as such, must be ' primarily responsible to the college in which they were elected. Second, the Elections Committee also stated, "We feel, as a commission, when Franklin spoke out at that rally that all students were not represented." Of course they weren't. If you go to a Texaco, Inc. to apply for a job, you'll read somewhere in the fine print that they are an "Equal Opportunity Employer." Now Texaco is the same company whose senior vice-president was caught on tape saying racial and hateful slurs about African Americans. "Clearly and equivocally" you can realize that if it wasn't for Affirmative Action, Texaco superiors would have made it hard for African Amerinana fn ho VnrnrJ VUUQ W MV imvu. Secondly, let's look at racism in America. "Clearly and equivocally" it Election Committee feel that it is possible to represent the entire student body at one rally? And if the SG president is supposed to represent all the students, doesn't that include the Young Angiy Minority Student Rally? If young, angry, and/or minority students have suddenly not become part of the student body as a whole, then how can the Student Government claim to represent the whole student body? Third, Elections Commission member Russell Gaither said about Franklin attending the rally, "He had a right to do what he did, but I feel it was the wrong time and the wrong place to do it." So, SG president had a right to speak at the rally, but because members of the Elections Committee feel that it was the wrong time and the wrong place to speak out, Franklin is asked to resign. Again, the Elections Committee is mis-using their authority. Frankly, as many friends of mine can attest, I have always treated Student Government as a joke. I have done Khi? fhnncrh T sprvpH ns a spnntnr in fhp USCA Student Government, and I still considered it something of a joke during campaign, and even after my election to the Student Government. I had even planned on showing up at the inauguration ceremony in a roman toga. However, recent actions and statements have changed this view. Congratulations Student Government, you have my attention.
