> Friday, February 20,1998 Brad Snyc Snyder, Bronmlee and the | rest of the Gamecock track and field team can be seen this weekend when they host the Gamecock Invitational, asst. sports editor NATHAN BROWN If s impressive that the USC men's and women's track and field teams are ranked No. 2 and No. 6 respectively in the nation. While Carolina's rankings are no^ table, the Gamecocks throwing duo of P Brad Snyder and Crystal Brownlee are just down right amazing. These two towers of throwing power dominate the SEC and recently cleaned house at the Husker Invitational. Snyder threw a new school record and an automatic NCAA qualifying toss of 65 feet 11 inches, while Brownlee improved her season-best and automatic qualification to 55 feet four^ and-one-quarter inches. W Being two of the best throwers in the nation, Brownlee and Snyder have learned quite a bit from one another and have developed a reciprocal relationship where they help each other to improve. "Brad is a great competitor," Brownlee said "He's been doiner this for a while. He's an Olympic athlete. So even practicing with him, you get a good feel for how to be one of the best competi^ tors because thafs what he is. [With him] ranked No. 1 in the country, you can't have a better person to work out with." Snyder also views Brownlee as a helpful asset to his training. "Crystal is older than I am," Snyder said. "[Ifs nice] to have someone with the experience that she has. She's been as many places as I have. Both of these tremendous athletes have enjoyed multitudes of success. Brownlee is a five-time All-American, three-time SEC Champion and participant of the World University Games. She holds the SEC outdoor shot put record and the indoor and outdoor school record. Not only can she throw the shot put a long way, but she also can throw out the right answers in class, which led to her being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll last year. But Brownlee isn't satisfied with what she's accomplished so far. "Hopefully, I can improve on my mark," Brownlee said. "[Going to the Various Artists a* vieir-:-'."? Breaking records and having success has been a regular occurrence foi Snyder, as well. Snyder is a three-time All-American, three-time SEC Champion, a competitor in the World University Games and the World Championships, and ? two-time team captain. Most notably, Snyder represented Canada in the 1996 Olympics. Last week, Snyder was named National Track and Field Athlete of the Week Dy 1 racKwire magazine. "Brad is an outstanding competiI tor," Frye said. "He has a wealth of knowledge from his international ex- s periences. "He looks to be a national contender ; for a national championship. He's do[ ing well academically, and his strength I levels are high. He can almost power cling 500 pounds, s "Crystal is a senior and an outstanding student, a marine biologist. She's leading the women in the throws. She's heading in the right direction. "These are two young people that well continue to see over the years other than just as Carolina graduates but as some of America's future in athleti ? ICS. If you want to see these two phenomenal athletes in action, come to Carolina's Weems-Baskin track facility behind the Roost. He called on LeRon Williams. Williams delivered. Williams' stats in the final 4:30: seven points and five rebounds. If Williams isn't in the game in those final frantic moments, the Gamecocks lose to Florida. Score tied at 70, less than a minute left, Williams rebounds a missed Florida shot Bj Mckie misses a jumper, Gallman gets the rebound, at least he thinks he does. A mad scramble ensues after Gallman is stripped of the ball, during which Williams makes a sacrifice of Rodmanian proportions, diving into the seats, all the while bouncing the ball off a Florida player's legs and giving USC precious possession. Then, Fogler calls a play that always works and always has. It worked last year, time and time again. It worked this year, too. Game on the line, take your pick: Mckie or Watson. Drive the lane. Make an acrobatic circus shot or draw foul. Game over. With the game hanging in the balance/Mckie's shot circles the rim, drops off. Then, sweet vindication within ~ his grasp, Williams rescues the ball from its descent, slams it home, then hangs on the rim for just an extra second, likely to rub it in Donovan's face just a bit more to give him something extra to think about on the ride back. After the Gators scored again to tie it, another USC shot clanged off the rim, this one Watson's, and Grant played the hero, tipping the ball in with less than a second left. But on this night, Williams was the true hero, rescuing s his team, surely himself, from a humiliating defeat. r Florida did everything to win that night: 51.9 percent shooting, all the 3pointers and a 12-point lead halfway [ through the second half. 1 The Gators played a great game, just not great enough. They couldn't res bound, offensively or defensively. It'll likely be the same story tomorrow. Perhaps Donovan's players know what i they're missing without Williams. They needn't blame him-for leaving, i For that, they can only blame coach. .0-2 PM res: 'a.* TV! 1 <aung i^isuruers m le Media: :y Model PM orders Screening 10-4 PM n Eating Disorders n Bag 12-1:30 PM eting LO-1 PM nation Call ss Programs DATA? ite in the Nation writers and web lovers ) 24 <? 7pm RHUU 333A litoroQsc. edu
