Suk is a graduate student of Computer Science and a member of two bands, Eclectia and Patrick's Cadillac. Eclectia was started by Wesley Joyner, Ashley Robeson and Suk when they began performing at Pattaya's Restaurant on Assembly Street Sunday nights. The name Patrick's Cadillac came about after Steven Bennett teamed up with David Knight, and Suk was invited into the band. Suk claims he felt a powerful draw to Irish music and to the tinwhistle. "I wanted to find something beautiful in myself," he said. "With the tinwhistle, I can make something beautiful a part of me." He admits, however, that if he had started earlier in his life, he may have been able to improve his singing ability. For now, he is content with his instrument. The tinwhistle is often a part of American movie soundtracks and can be heard in the music of Titanic. Suk explained that Irish music appears simple, but there is more to it than many people realize. It has surprising complications and depth. "The best Irish musicians play with the rhythm in very subtle and complex ways," Suk said. Another important part of Irish music is dancing. One kind of dancing that really moves Suk is "contra-dancing," derived from English and Scottish country dance. JSC Under* Need a job?
