Blockb w past dt I thought defensively that we were really pretty good," Fogler said. Carolina's defense held the Vols to a meager 29.5 percent from the field. At 33.3 percent, Tennessee had a higher 3-point percentage than field goal percentage. Both were nothing to write home about. Not only did UT have trouble shooting the ball, they had trouble just getting it to the other side of the court. With 19 steals, USC set a new school record for the most steals in a game. This eclipsed the previous mark of 15, which was set in 1993 against Georgia and Ole Miss. The Gamecocks also forced 28 turnovers, one shy of tying the school record. UTs turnovers led to 31 points for Carolina. "I thought our defense was the key," Fogler said. "It gave us a lot of opportunities on the fastbreak." The start of the game was anything but fast, especially for USC. Six minutes into the first half, only 17 points had been scored, and Carolina was down by five, 11-6. But from this point on, the Gamecocks dominated their opponent, outscoring the Vols 33-9 up to half-time. For six and a half minutes in the opening half, Carolina held UT score less while scoring 16 straight points. In the midst of this scoring onslaught, Bj Mckie gave USC the lead at the 11:50 mark on a basket plus a free throw. Never looking back, the Gamecocks led for the rest of the half, and the game, by as much as 32 points before winning by 30. A major factor in USC's win was LeRon Williams. Coming off the bench, Williams scored a team-high and personal best 25 points. But Williams wasn't limited to scoring. He set a personal record in rebounds with nine, which was also a team-high on the night. "It [my performance] was pretty good," Williams said. "I have to give a lot of credit to the guys. As far as Georgia, I didn't get any looks, and I was kind of disappointed, down on myself. Coach said quit acting like a baby, tough it out, and just come back and play. That's what I did." Unfortunately for Williams, the next two games for USC are on the road. Away from the Coliseum, Williams is averaging only three points and two rebounds per game compared to 14.2 points and six boards at home. "I have no idea [why I play better at home]," Williams said. "I thought about that tonight. One player who plays well no matter where the contest is held is Mckie. Finishing with 20 points and five assists, Mckie stated that this win was ?L i. . i. r n i: ail important victory lor c^arumia. "If you want to get back on top and want to stay in the race [for an SEC title], you have to win at home and win some on the road," Mckie said. The next game for the Gamecocks will be on the road as USC travels to Auburn for a 3 pm tip-off tomorrow against the Tigers (11-5,3-2 SEC).
