About the time that Rockafellas opened, in 1984, the Elbow Room on Harden Street made its first steps toward its evolution into a musical venue. With the acquisition of The Breakfast Club in 1988, it acquired more space and began toying with the idea of booking shows. "They (the management) would hold shows, before the fall of'94 only on days of special events, like the (Carolina) Cup, a Clemson/Carolina game or something like that" recalls Alex Curran El bow Room manager. Everything changed when he started booking shows on Wednesday nights there. "We started booking shows on Wednesday nights in the fall of 1994...with that success we added more nights with performances until the fall of 1995. We were having shows four nights a week" Now the Elbow Room is in the process of evolving once again. The renovation involves big changes, but most noticeable to the general public is the tv r* l uaimy utj Langston STAFF REPORTS A X Actors Danny Glover and Felix will star in "An Evening with Langston ai tin" Jan. 24 at the Roger Center. The addition of the words "Music Hall" to the name is much more significant than a change of logo on paper products and getting a new sign on the outside of the building. It is a solid commitment to providing Columbia great music every week, within a club laid out for the sole purpose of having performances for a long time to comer The sound booth has been moved to the back of the room and the old, waist high dividing wall separating the bar from the show area is gone, thus opening up the club and giving more "quality" room for the people to watch the show. No longer will people be forced to watch a packed show from the dark pit behind the sound booth, where deciding when to make a break for couch space or the bathroom was as important as watching the shows. The entrance to the music venue will be moved to the original entrance of the bar. "There will be a ticket window and a person scanning tickets as you go inside," Curran said. In addition to building upgrades the sound system is being upgraded. [over to vi Hughes i civil rights I' leader King, / :^$| sharing Kings ) Justice message with id Mar- theaudience- 1 .
