March i % To the editor, i This letter is pertaining to the * "Million Woman March." The purpose v of this letter is to add an additional re source to your article, because in my opinion the article was very lifeless ? when it was such a beautiful event, i I would, first of all, like to say I ? also attended the march, but I did not attend with the University of South 1 ^ Carolina, and I find it very hard to be- v lieve the entire student body knew 8 about USC offering transportation to 8 this event when only 11 students went 1 I also find it hard to believe only 11 j students went from this university. ^ Next, I would like to address that in the article it stated CNN reported 1.2 million people at the event. I stayed at the event from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and i.l iJ .i.j j. _j. o n n 1 unts esuiutiuju cuuiii at l p.m. was ^.o million, and as I was leaving at 5 p.m., \ ^ there was still subways full of people coming to the event. Therefore, it was a whole lot more than 1.2 million peo- ' pie. What really disappointed me about 8 the article was that the spirit of the ^ event was completely left out. Women * from different states and religions were s acting as if they were sisters. The e speakers expressed how we needed to ^ unify, be better mothers for the next generation and what we could do to re- v 9 pair the damage already done to this I: generation. This message went through ( the entire crowd. - f Not only were there many great 8 wuiucii apccmera, omuiig uieui qiswji Souljah, but there were also support- ^ ive men at the event, and among diem r were Blair Underwood and Speech from ^ Arrested Development. Contrary to popular belief, there were Caucasian t Americans at the event, so it was open 0 to everyone. ? The messages the speakers said at the events were carried in our hearts back to Columbia. Jamel, Kim, Susanne and the rest of the Senate and Cabinet are doing their best to make it easy for students to take part in SG. The Gamecock suggests visiting residence halls or student organizations. In fact, just recently SG did send letters to every student organization offering either for someone to come speak at a meeting or to provide a packet of information. This too is a worthy effort (one for which SG should be aDDlauded) es pecially because they recognize that it is not a substitute for the "Meet Your Student Government Day" as The Gamecock suggests. Maybe it would be a good idea for a SG representative to attend different organizational meetings occasionally, but it would, be impossible, as well as inconvenient, for a large group from SG to come to one organizational meeting. "Meet Your Student Government Day" is a much better way for a student to meet all of Senate and Cabinet at once. And what about students who do not belong to an organization or live on campus? These are most likely the students who need their voices heard the most, and SG's reception after Senate was an open invitation to them. Yes, SG has limited power. Yes, they are limited in action that they can take. I know that the reason that students do not vote and participate in SG is because they think that SG has no real authority. Yet the reason that they have limited authority is precisely be cause more students do not vote and become involved. The more students that vote and participate, the more the administration listens. SG is doing the best they can to break this Catch-22 and involve as many as possible. As another student organization, The Gamecock should praise SG for their attempts instead of mocking them. Perhaps, even, The Gamecock should learn from them. I hear more complaints about our student newspaper than our student Senate, and I do not see Student Media inviting students to come share their ideas. Each organization on this campus should have one goal and one goal only, to serve the student body. SG is trying their hardest to do this. The Gamecock is only making fun of it. Clearly, sarcastic comments do much less to serve the students than hard work designed to better represent us all. I feel that as a student, it's important to be educated about the use and misuse of alcohol on our campus. Many students don't realize how many problems can occur when alcohol is misused. Also, college students who drink the most also earn the lowest grades. Alcohol doesn't only affect academics, but it also can be a contributing factor to problems in interpersonal relationships. I work for the Office of Alcohol and Drug programs, and I'm able to visit classes and residence halls where I facilitate discussions regarding alcohol. Many people have misconceptions about the use of alcohol on campus, and the purpose of these presentations is to better inform students. Many of the facts that are used in 7 the presentations were contained in the supplement that was placed in The Gamecock Nov. 5. But I would like to reiterate some of these points because ora imnnrfonf IUV VUUVi Many of the facts were of a more positive nature than the ones that most students hear. For instance, one out of every four USC students has never used alcohol, and three out of every four USC students have never used illegal drugs. These statistics show that "everyone" doesn't drink or get high. I say this because I know that . there is a perception that all college students drinlc use dnios and crener ally are irresponsible in their choices. That simply isn't true, and this myth that "everyone else does it" needs to be dispelled. A large number of college students have made responsible choices concerning their use of alcohol. I hope SAVE week will give all students the opportunity to better educate themselves on the facts about alcohol use and a chance to participate in some of the different activities that are going on. Education is the key in making responsible decisions.
