Not living up to the billing however, is the Back In Business album released in early October. i "Da Joint," produced by the "green- c eyed bandit" himself, is the official first ? single and possibly the best cut from g Back In Business. Now don't get me wrong, EPMD's Back In Business is not a field of disaster product like L.L. Cool J's Phenomenon, nor is it as frightening as the concept of a new Will Smith rap album. However, Back In Business would be better if there were more songs (11, not counting an intro, skit, remix and remake), and a more diverse field of production. | www.cenap ^rfoadrunnefS KJNGOFLATEN to Boot... veryday low s - 59.97 als? Y. band releas ROB BERNTSEN Staff Writer BEAUTIFUL CHARADE Camber (Deep Elm Records) OOOO (out of five stars) Since overzealous music journalists have to put every band into some genre, the New York band Camber falls somewhere in emo-core. But like all great bands, Camber is more than a style of music. Its members didn't do the hardcore thing, so Camber isn't a true emo-core band in the same sense of a Lifetime. They're more Sunny Day-core,, and although singer Barry Lott admits, "There is some Sunny Day Real Estate in us," Camber isn't a clone either. Intensity and honesty are their greatest assets, so for now lefs just say they're one of the better post-first carnation Sunny Day-core bands around. Camber has the good fortune of time since emo/Sunny Day-core is still a pretty new thing and untapped financial resource. It's only a matter of time until the major labels shell out millions in emo-dollars, (Jimmy Eat World and pre-break-up Texas is the Reason), and the masses will catch on that it's one of music's most worthwhile genres. The mood varies from the manicaggressive "Marking the Days" to the more pure emo, title track and stunning passions of "Sever." Lott sings in the same vocal tones as former SDRE M. singer and possible god Jeremy Enigk, and at times has the same kind of stage presence with his contorted facial expressions and eyes rolling to the back of his head. There were times at a Hoboken, N.J., show that Lott reminded me so much of Enigk it was eerie, but in that good way. There's a purity to Camber because its members have that all too uncommon genuine love for music. They talk about bands like Sunny Day, Mineral and Karate with the same passion i __i.i : _ iL i. ana enmusiasm as 11 iney werejusi regular guys and not in an incredible band. Lott gets most of the attention as singers often do, but Camber is a band in the truest sense of the word. The tight, sometimes almost jazzinfluenced drum style combined with the melodic guitar textures give Camber a well-rounded approach. They ^ don't ever stumble into clumsiness, the Achilles' heel and downfall of emo bands. Camber is rock-steady, never once sacrificing song texture or lyrical substance for the sake of chaotic emotion. If Camber keeps growing, they'll be sipping martinis with the emo-gods pret ly soon.
