Two Saturdays ago, the Gamecocks
manhandled the No. 1 defense in the |
SEC. This past Saturday, Carolina shut ,
down Tennessee quarterback and Heis- (
man hopeful Peyton Manning and ,
the No. 1 offense in the SEC. But despite
the valiant defensive effort, the
Gamecocks fell to the No. 8-ranked Ten- '
nessee Volunteers 22-7.
Head Coach Brad Scott seemed !

"I was proud with the effort of our
football team," Scott said. "As I talked
to my players just a few moments ago ^
[after the end of the game], two years
ago, we brought a team up here that
wouldn't compete in a ball game like .
this.
i
"And our defense, I thought, competed
very hard the entire ballgame
but gave up a couple of big plays on \
some runs but played with a lot of heart
and determination. Unfortunately, we
had some injuries in the ballgame."

who will miss the rest of the season because
of two torn ligaments in his right
knee. With Wright gone, redshirt freshman
Victor Penn will be the starting
QB for the remaining games.
In the second quarter against
the 'Vols, Penn was called into action
after Wright was taken off the field on
a stretcher. Making his first major appearance
in front of 106,301 spectators,
Penn gave a performance worthy of
Heisman consideration when you weigh
his game against that of Manning's.
^ Penn completed 56.3 percent of his
passes, compared to 32 percent for Manning.
In total passing yardage, Penn's
total was 16 yards fewer than Manning's.
Manning threw for zero TDs and
one interception. Penn, on the other
hand, had no interceptions and one TD
pass.
Scott appeared happy with Penn's
showing, especially with the last drive
^ of the game.
