It has brought two SEC Championships, many victories over Clemson, and some bad moments, too. In honor of the accomplishments and the student-athletes that make the programs as great as they are, it's time to highlight some of the great times in the 1996-97 school year. Best Performance by a male student-athlete in a supporting role ? Jamar Nesbit. In the Carolina-Kentucky game, the sophomore offensive lineman started at tackle, and when fellow sophomore center Paul Beckwith went down with a knee injury, Nesbit moved to center where he blocked for senior Duce Staley. Staley proceeded to rush tor two touchdowns m the game. Best Performance by a female student-athlete in a supporting role ? Lisa Misipeka. The "thiuwin' Samoan" would be the No.l thrower in any other school's track and field program, but here at South Carolina she has tossed in the shadow of senior Ail-American Dawn Ellerbe. This year however, Misipeka has beaten Ellerbe twice in the hammer throw. Best Musical Score ? "Vail ready for this" at the men's basketball games. This crowd pumping song that's played dining introductions has really gotten the crowd juiced for some big wins over Kentucky, Georgia, and Ole Miss. Best Celebration ? Tanner has taken the baseball team to some new heights this year in just his first year at the helm. Tanner has the team in third place in the SEC, and has led them to two defeats of Clemson including the 38-16 thrashing last Wednesday. Cheer of the Year?"1,2,3,4,5. Bye, Bye. Don't go away mad, just go away." This cheer at the basketball games is the most original and insulting in the nation. It's performed when a player from the opposing team fouls out of the ball game. Funniest event of the year ? At the Tennessee home football game this past year, junior running back Scott Moritz scored a touchdown for the fiemecncks. As he crossed the goal line, Smokey, the Tennessee mascot, bit Moritz on the buttocks to show his disapproval of the score. The play was shown on ESPN, CNN, and even Dick Clark's Bloopers and Practical Jokes. Worst Move of the Year ? Ejecting The Ballheads" from the SEC Volleyball Tournament last year. Clutch Play of the Year ? Senior Lany Davis hit a three-point shot with 50 seconds remaining in the Kentucky basketball contest to get the Gamecocks within two points of the Wildcats. On the shot Davis was double-teamed and had to shoot the ball over the leaping All-American Ron Mercer. Freshman of the Year ? Herbert Lee Davis. Davis had a solid year contributing as a fourth guard for the Gamecocks. He hit four big shots in the win at LSU to score a career-high 12 points. Low Point of the Year?Scott Harley ran for a mile against the Gamecocks, and early preparations were being made to reconstruct Noah's Ark. Team of the Year ? The Lady Gamecock softball team. They won 38 straight games, and have set a school record for wins in a single season. They also have won the SEC Championship, and have to be favorites to advance to the NCAA College Softball World Series in May.
