Her debut CD Rapt is an eclectic album featuring intense tracks like "Down in The Underground" and hushed masterpieces like "Silver Room" and "Cowgirl Hero." The songs on Rapt started to form after $ Blasband's first band, Les Enfant Terrible, broke up. After meeting producer Warren Bruliegh (Throwing ??.j Muses, Violent Femmes) she recorded a demo in 1993 and an EP in 1995. Mercury Records signed her to a record deal soon after that EP was released. Blasband and band members Gordon Gano (guitar), Lonnie Hillyer (bass), Frank Ferrer (drums) and Melora Creager (cello) started work on Rapt a month after signing the record deal. The best song on the album, "Sugar" features distorted vocals and catchy lyrics. On other songs like "Everything That Rises Must Converge" and "Chill" she sounds like an intimate folk singer. "Alfred," a song about her grandfather, has personal lyrics like "A businessman /he needs ? his f defenses in this world/no time for little girls like me." As an artist, Blasband owes a lot to Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell. These influences ^ ^3 can be . jMHmI heard t throughout the album. Though Rapt is a solid piece of work, Blasband has yet to reach her full potential. The weaker songs on the album sound too similar, and some of the songs are repetitious.
