"I thought our pitchers came out and threw well," USC head coach Joyce Compton said. "I thought the ^ defense, when we had the opportunities to make plays, made the plays." T i.L _ n i_ Al._ 3 1 1 in tne nrst game, uie uuru-raiiKKu Lady Gamecocks, who moved up a spot in the latest USA Today/NFCA Collegiate Softball Poll, combined the usual dominant pitching with clusters of hits to down the Lady Pirates, 8?-0, in a game called early because of the 8-run mercy rule. Johnson came out on fire as she struck out the first 11 batters she 4H faced. Isonette Polonius was the only batter to place the ball in play as she popped up to second baseman Kim Schultze in the fourth. Johnson went on to strike out the next three batters en route to picking up the no-hitter. It is Johnson's third perfect game of the season and fourth for her career. USC scored one run in the bottom of the first and that would be enough, but the Carolina was determined to blow the game wide open. Senior Chanda Lee led off the game with an infield single and then stole second. After moving to third on sophomore Km Pietro's groundout, Lee scored on a throwing error. South Carolina added two more runs in the fourth when junior Karri Peters and sophomore Kendra McCutcheon singled to lead off the inning. Peters scored on another throwing error by the Lady Pirate catcher and McCutcheon was driven in by Pietro's double to left-center. X CUCIO and McCutcheon both reached base and were again driven in by Pietro, this time by a single to right field. Leading 6-0 going into the fifth inning, USC needed only two runs to end the game early. The first came when Johnson reached on a double and was driven in by Brown's single to the left-center gap. The Lady Gamecocks ended the game when Peters singled in Brown. I oi didn't really have that many pitches, which kind of made it less of a d challenge, but I was happy with my IV performance," Johnson said. In the second game, USC a pitchers were once again in control. Senior Carrie Lyons singled to right-center to lead off the fourth and Peters came in to pinch run for her. Lee brought the crowd to its feet in the fifth inning when she reached on an infield hit Rhonda Rostfs throw to first sailed into right field and allowed Lee to advance to third. ECU'S second baseman, Polonius, tracked down the ball and threw it over Rost's head, allowing Lee to score and make the score, 3-0. Brown doubled in the sixth and moved to third on Dammer's single. Hall drove her in with a double to left and Troesh singled in Dammer to make it 5-0. Brown came in to pitch the last three innings and picked up her first save of the year. She gave up only two hits as she threw three shutout innings in relief. The Lady Gamecock pitchers weren't the only story of the day. This weekend the Lady Jamecock golf team will host the 8th Annual SEC Women's Golf Xiampionships at The University Tub in Blythewood. The event begins today and ontinues through Sunday. The highest-ranked team in the tournament is LSU, with Auburn and South Carolina close behind. "We have got some great competition out here this weekend," Arney said. "We are aware of that, and we understand that staying within our game plan is going to be the key to our success." This event will be the second home course tournament for the Lady Gamecocks this season.
