Most people don't meet the standard "a
of adequate physical health due to
little or no regimen of physical activity, it<
according to health experts. And a<
Americans need to be more active in to
everyday things, like walking, before di
they try to find a particular regimen ac
of exercise.
According to the Surgeon General ai
on Physical Activity and Health, 60 es
percent of the adults in the U.S. don't es
participate in regular activity or
exercise, and 25 percent of the adults
are not active at alL In addition, those
between the ages of 12-21 are not
vigorously active on a regular basis.
The problem with physical inactivity
or lack of exercise is a higher risk of
health problems, like developing
(M;K diabetes or a premature death, as well
as a greater risk for depression, anxiety
and weight problems.
"There's 250 million people in the
U.S. with 25 percent of adults [that
are not active physically]," Ben
Yaspelkis, assistant professor in the pi
kinesiology department says. si
"The purpose is to just get these
people active....if you are inactive th
now... you need to increase your active w
lifestyle," he adds. ec
The Surgeon General recommends m
moderate amounts of some tvpe of us
activity that burns a thousand calories or
a week, or 150 calories per day.

and control weight and tightens
muscles. Exercise also reduces the risk
of heart disease and diabetes, as well ^ ^
as reduce stress and anxiety, blood
pressure and the risk of dying
prematurely.
Whether you want to lose weight,
maintain weight or tighten and
strengthen muscles, good health and
well-being with less stress will be the
result of regular exercise. If you
want to reduce your weight and
improve your health, you need to start
out slowly with the particular activity
you are interested in, as well as i*
understand what steps are taken to
improve your physical health
successfully.
One of the first items to establish
is what type of exercise you will use.
Aerobic, or oxygen-burning exercise
is required if you want to loose fat,
and depending on the individual's size
and amount of calories needed daily,
you want to burn more calories than
consumed.
Covert Bailey, in "Smart Exercise," ' '
says that you begin burning fat after
twelve minutes of aerobic exercise on
average, and that more fat is burned
if exercising for 30 minutes.
Aerobic exercise, which conditions
the major muscles of your body will
increase energy and can be as simple
as twenty minutes of brisk walking
or ioreine. and even regular walking
for 20 minutes three times weekly, for
example. This helps reduce body fat
and the risk for heart attack by 18
percent, according to1 The Way to t >
Health and Fitness."
Beginners can start out with 10 to
20 minutes of walking three times a
week or running for 20 minutes three
times a week. Eventually, increase
time and duration to a standard level
of fitness.
