Features Editor Amid the controversy about the Confederate flag flying above our capitol, one fraternity at USC is taking a positive approach to Southern culture and the heritage of the Confederacy. Each year the KA's from across South Carolina, which includes eight chapters, meet for a weekend gala of music, dancing and camaraderie. The event is called the Old South. This year the festivities took place at Hilton Head, with over 600 members and their dates attending. Since 1920, KA's all over the country have sponsored an Old South weekend. "We're the only KA j province in the nation that does a joint Old South with all the other chapters in the province,'' said Jimmy Bailey, outgoing president of the Columbia campus KA chapter. The planning is an enormous undertaking because of the huge attendance. A statewide Old South chairman arranges everything. This will be Bailey's task for the upcoming year. Old South officially begins on a Thursday, when fraternity members march in Confederate regalia to South Tower to present their dates with invitations. They confer upon fCA each date the status of "Southern belle for a weekend." The girls think ifs neat," Bailey said. The guys get down on one knee and read the invitations out loud."
