This sounds like a pretty strange scenario, but this unique relationship exists between the two best women throwers in the nation. These accomplished athletes are Dawn Ellerbe and Lisa Misipeka of USC's track and field team. Ellerbe and Misipeka have swept every competition in the 20-pound weight and the hammer throw. For their outstanding performances this season, they have already qualified for the 20pound weight and the shot put for the NCAA indoor championships. Recently, Ellerbe won her fifth SEC title in the weight throw, while Misipeka finished second in the same event. "They have been quite a one-two punch," throwing coach Larry Judge said. "For the past two years, they have been one and two in the 20-pound weight and the hammer throw. Dawn has beeji undefeated in both events the past two years, and Lisa has lost only to Dawn. "Right now, they have the top two throws in both events in NCAA history. With Ellerbe, Misipeka, and [Crystall Brownlee [a teammatel, we've got probably the best [throwers! in the country, if not in NCAA history." Although Ellerbe and Misipeka are competitors, they still eryoy a close friendship. "We're good friends," Ellerbe said. "We're the best of friends," an agreeing Misipeka said. Perhap6 their relationship has endured because of how they've dealt with their situation of Ellerbe always being the bride and Misipeka the mm ^ . ||8k Jpw ^ s.. : i ' ' I *- ,.fp AJL sayi ... t. ,^rlM[ii * - - -? * - *.-, Lisa Misipeka a junior has to compete in the mate and best friend NCAA Champion Dawn E < > ^^K?1K#^qJ Yac ?t wBmmfmm Ye Indoor Vyl SPORTS WHEN YOU GET BAC SPC weight of ff bridesmaid. =^= "We both feel that "II A I once we're off the track, 1 | (J 1 there is no more track," Misipeka said. i il 11 Even when they're on the track, their goal isn't a a| to beat one another. 3 U "We don't really compete with one ? > ?WJ| another," Ellerbe said. ^ " HP "We just try not to let w * w% it O *5 anyone come in between * | ) jfv 1M Q * US." ?VV "It doesn't matter ^TTT17 V * [who wins] as long as no i-' vu 1 other school comes Mm A between us," Misipeka fl Whpn t.hp two arpn't. w~%. w crushing the opposition, ivl JLl/ 1 f ^ they "go to the mall, do girlie kinds of things, and {/ go out to eat," Misipeka >3* jjM they're roommate sand ? flj share a mutual respect. * "She's a true athlete," Misipeka said about Senior All-American Dawi EHerbe. The Gamecocks pounded out hit after hit in the two-game series, winning 16-6 and 18-4 to run their record to 13-3. In Tuesday's first game, USC drubbed 17 hits off VMI starter W.G. Smith. A red-hot Eric Stanton led the team with four hits, all singles, and shortstop Adam Everett got three hits, including a double. The Gamecocks led 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Jay Carlos unloaded on the tiring Smith's 1-2 pitch to lead off the inning. Stanton then singled, and freshman Adam Poe followed with a single up the middle. -VMI Head Coach Scott Grimes decided he'd seen enough of Smith, bringing reliever Ryan Mitchell in. Mitchell promptly walked catcher Rob Streicher, Ryan Szwejbka reached on an error, Derick Urquhart reacnea on a neiaers cnoice, Aaam Everett singled to left, and Mike Curiy cleared the bases with a triple. The Gamecocks faced VMI again Wednesday, wasting no time taking control of the game. USC scored three times in the bottom of the first on a triple by Everett, a double by Curry and a double by Carlos after Ryan Bordenick walked. Eric Stanton drove in the third run of the inning with a pop-up to the first baseman that drew the catcher off home plate. VMI pitcher Jay Adams forgot to cover home, so Bordenick tagged up and just barely beat catcher John Yates back to the plate. The 50-foot sacrifice fly prompted Gamecock historian Tom Price to Manning opts t one more year BRYAN JOHNSTON Sports Editor Ending months of speculation, Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning announced Wednesday that he will remain at Tennessee for his final year of eligibility. The Gamecocks scored one in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth, and exploded for eight more in the fifth, giving them an 18-1 lead. Everett and Curry paced the team with three hits each. Starter Brent Moore turned in a fine performance on the mound, going six innings and allowing only four hits, three walks, and one earned run. This gave USC Head Coach Ray Tanner, who stated before the season that pitching would be the big question marie for this team, a chance to reflect on what he's seen so far this season. "Jason Pomar got hurt, and he missed a few days, but his last outing was good," Tanner said. "He's got to develop that kind of consistency for us. Brett Jodie, all you ask is your pitchers give you a chance to win. You don't ask them to throw a shutout, you don't ask them to strike out twelve a game. "Jake Whitfield had some good innings, Brent Moore and Eddie Hoff have pitched a lot of innings for us already, so if we can get that group of guys to be a little more consistent, then it will give us a better chance in these SEC games." The Southeastern Conference games start today against Auburn at Sarge Frye Field. "Taking on Auburn, who's probably gonna be 17-0 coming in here and ranked by one poll eighth or ninth in the country, it's tough," Tanner said. Today's and Saturday's games start at 7 p.m. Sunday's game starts at 2 p.m ;o stay in college at Tennessee thing that swayed his decision. There was no main thing," Manning said. "It was just like when I signed here, it was just sort of a feeling." . Volunteer football Head Coach Phillip Fulmer was expectedly excited. The Tennessee people through the generations have held loyalty and commitment in the veiy highest regards," Fulmer said. Manning, who has already graduated from UT, holds 19 Tennessee passing records and was expected to be the No. 1 draft pick in the 1997 NFL Draft if he had entered. Manning helped lead the Vols to a New Year's Day Citrus Bowl win over Northwestern this year. t&e-f <4 on Spring, anp af \Aa-r, j" t&troat Roommate ^?oor I Ha* S+ar+iitt a+ $557 ' Mwtfiwi Ad for AaUrfiwal ! ?aff 55~6-86>OQ Howard Stern'i Private Parts (R) 1:20 4:15 7:25 10:00 " Donnle Brasco (R) 1:15 4:10 7:05 9:50 Absolute Power (R) 1:10 4:00 7:00 9:50 The Empire Strikes Back (PG) (DTS) 1:30 4:20 7:10 10:00 Jungle to Jungle (PG) 1:45 4:30 7:15 9:45 Shine (PG13) 1:50 4:25 7-20 9:45 English Patient (R) 1:00 7:45 Vegas Vacation (PG) <:30 Ticket office opens at 12:30pm.
