The Gamecocks have shot poorly and let Wofford play the team close. It appeared for the first 15 minutes of the women's game Monday night at the Frank McGuire Arena that iV.. Sophomore point guard Nikki Miars has been cold of late and the Lady Gamecocks have struggled to play good defense or shoot consistently. The recent string of losses have been to strong teams. Among those teams are nationally-ranked Alabama, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Auburn. The the margin of those losses were all by at least 30 points. But the Lady Gamecocks had a chance to forget all those losses in the conference and play in-state, non-conference rival Wofford, whom the Gamecocks beat last year, 8747. Carolina owned all facets of the game in running away from the Lady Terriers, 80-50. The Lady Terriers (3-24) were overwhelmed at the outset of the game as All-SEC freshman Annie Lester scored four quick points to give Carolina an 8-3 lead. After the lead reached 16-9 on junior Rachell Lee's layup with eight minutes left in the first half, Wofford , ?e|i " fini BEAM. Lo< 9 P Js look for more \ ';\?Aswalns^0^o' Sv-V. "Yboro /? By beating the Tennessee Volunteers Saturday, the USC men's basketball team pushed its SEC record to 13-1 (21-6 overall), and in the process positioned itself to grab at least a share of the SECs regular season title in its last two games of the season. But don't think just a share of the trophy means mission accomplished for the Gamecocks, winners of 16 of their last 17 games and ranked No. 6 nationally. With sole claim to an unprecedented, undisputed SEC title at stake and, perhaps more importantly, a No.l or No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament as well, there remains a hunger for more in Columbia. The mission continues tonight, when the Gamecocks (21-6,13-1 SEC) host the Vanderbilt Commodores (17-9, 8-6 SEC) in their last home game of the season. "I think this team has made long strides to put ourselves in this type of position," sophomore guard BJ McKie said. "I think we need to finish what we started, and I think we can do that tomorrow night if we come ready to play." A Gamecock victory tonight will give South Carolina its first Southeastern Conference title in any sport. Should USC win tonight and lose against Kentucky, the Wildcats and Gamecocks will be co-champions, and Kentucky will receive the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament due to having a better division record. The message for the Gamecocks is clear: lose to Vandy and forget about the SEC title. What's more, a loss to the Commodores will all but erase the momentum USC has gained since late December?16of-17 games won, an 8-1 road record and the wins over UK and Cincinnati. With a 17-9 overall record (8-6 SEC), Vanderbilt is looking for something the Gamecocks have long since earned?an appearance in the NCAA's. And judging the Commodores' play of late, their tourney hopes look encouraging. Vandy has won six out of seven games, including wins over Memphis, Arkansas and Georgia. In Nashville, Melvin Watson hit a 12-foot jumper with 17 seconds left to boost then-No. 25 USC to its ninth-straight victory and eighthstraight in the SEC. It set J.e otage for the dramatic Kentucky win two games later. Are the Gamecocks better now than almost a month ago, when a they eeked out the win in Nashville? "I think we're better, I think they're better," Fogler said. "They are playing excellent ball. You don't get up 19 in the first half at Georgia and win at Georgia. You don't give Kentucky 22 or 23 (points) anywhere unless you're very good or playing very well and they've done both of those things in the last week." Playing good and well has been no problem for senior guard Larry Davis, who, along with Nate Wilbourne, will be playing his last game in Frank McGuire Arena tonight. Despite feeling somewhat sentimental about the occasion, it's business as usual for Davis. "I'll get teased by the fellows, I just don't want to go out and cry," Davis said. * Davis said the objective for he and Wilbourne when they transferred to USC last season was to put USC basketball back where they felt it belonged. "When we got here, Nate and I talked about helping the program go in the right direction, and we're very satisfied with the way the team is going right now," he said. 1 I ^ Roofiee iake DUI Crashes Assault Hotel Room Dating Break Ins Violence IARKS!"
