Carolina came out on fire in the second half as they went on a 8-2 run in the first four minutes of the half. The lead reached seven at the 53-46 mark when Larry Davis hit another 3-pointer to up his scoring total to 19 at the 15:30 mark. The Bulldogs rattled off four straight points and the game seesawed back and forth until the 6:33 marlf uiKon T arrv Havio Viic lact points (24) of the game. With that shot, Carolina looked to be in control with a 67-61 lead. A BJ McKie free throw seconds later gave USC a 68-61 lead. What happened next was not pretty. Harrison for three, Chadwick for three and Harrison for three; in the blink of an eye the Gamecocks had gone from controlling the game to being controlled. Those nine-straight points gave the Bulldogs a 70-68 lead and their faithful a reason to get loud. "Harrison was terrific tonight," Fogler said. "Those three 3-pointers in a row really hurt us tonight." "What we did tonight was let them get into a rhythm," Watson said. "[Harrisonl started to get the feel there and he just started nailing them." With 3:36 left, William Gallman was fouled on a shot, but missed both his free throws. Georgia mounted a 74-68 lead before Watson hit a jump shot to cut the lead to four. Then off a Larry Davis steal, McKie took the ball to the hole to make the score 74-72, Bulldogs, with 33.6 seconds left. The press was on after a Gamecock timeout and it appeared Chadwick walked with the ball, but was granted a timeout instead. After all the excitement of the last few seconds wore off, the Gamecocks stood on the short-end of a 77-74 score. The crowd rushed the floor, and the USC fans in attendance stood in shock as the 12game winning streak ended. But the Gamecocks are still 111 in the SEC and 17-6 overall. They still have a one game lead over Kentucky, and a chance to once again show the nation they are for real when they travel to No. 8 Cincinnati Saturday. "It was a tough loss for our team," Fogler said. "I am pleased with our effort offensively. We are still in a position to accomplish some of our goals that this team has." However that chance will be all for naught if they can't rebound and score instead. AwlW 1 W Promo Code Ticket Desig f? ( Travel Comg ard Oard 1 On United Airline not replaceable if lost or stolen. Davidson was playing their first game of the season, and it showed. The defense made four errors, the offense recorded only one run, and the pitching gave up 18 earned runs. Davidson shortstop Ben Brown made three of the errors, but also recorded one of the team's two hits. USC pitcher Jake Whitfield dominated opposing batters for five innings, tallying six strikeouts and allowing no runners to reach first base safely. He left the game after the fifth inning with the perfect game still intact and the Gamecocks leading 17-0. Ryan Bordenick continued his early-season success at the plate, going five for five with three runs scored and four driven in. He leads the Gamecocks with 15 RBIs. Mike Curry pulled ahead of Bordenick in home runs, driving his fourth homer to deep right field with two on and one out in the second inning. Curry also drove in four runs to raise his total to 13, right behind Bordenick. Catcher Rob Streicher and second baseman Ryan Szwejbka had three hits each. ? Rob Watson had some problems findincr the nlate in the ninth walking three batters and allowing a single to Gus Quattlebaum that scored Luke Goodwin for Davidson's first and only run. Just for fun The Gamecocksiplay 56 regular Reason games this season. Although the competition down the road will surely be tougher, it is still fun to play with the numbers a little bit. Ryan Bordenick has 3 home runs and 15 RBIs in only four games. At-that pace, he would have 42 homers, 210 RBIs and bat .765. Mike Curry would be right with him. Curry is on a pace to hit 56 homers. The Gamecocks play this weekend at the Citgo Southern Challenge, where they will meet Furman, ETSU, and the Citadel. The next home game for the team is Wednesday when they take on Charleston Southern. Olympian looking for more records SNYDER continued from page 8 ranked No. 1 in the nation all year. On his goals for the rest of the year, Snyder said, "I want to get healthy and win the NCAAs." "I'd eventually like to win the Olympics," Snyder said. Big-time competition is not foreign to Snyder's family. His mother ran in the 1972 Olympics at Munich. His father played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s. "I'd like to follow my father's footsteps, not becoming a football player but a professional athlete," Snyder said. To attain the standards of his role models and achieve his own goals, Snyder trains for about five hours each day, two hours throwing and three lifting weights. During practice, he works on his technique. "Technically, I'm not very good. If I work on that and build strength, TO get better," Snyder said. Snyder credits Judge with having the most impact on his career. "If not for Coach Judge, I wouldn't be throwing as far," Snyder said. Between training and competitions, Snyder said he finds time to study his major, criminal justice, read Tom Clancy novels and rest. /nn/in A? ^UL/IV? lUUllllg the pressure PRESSURE continued from page 8 The backcourt is led by senior guard Damon Flint, who averages 9.9 points per game. Guard Darnell Burtor. has made a clean sweep of Cincinnati's career 3-point shooting records. The 6-2 senior has career totals of 277 treys in 700 attempts. Burton also had a school-record streak of 51 straight games in which he scored at least one 3-point goal. It's likely the Gamecocks will have to play a perfect game to beat the Bearcats. According to the latest NCAA stats, Cincy was ranked eighth in scoring offense, third in field goal percentage offense, fifth in average scoring margin and third in average rebound margin. Individually, Fortson is ranked 12th nationally in scoring; 17th in rebounding and fourth in field goal percentage. The Bearcats have held all but nine of their foes this year under the 40 percent mark in field goal shooting, and has held two opponents under 30 percent Cincy has a 38.9 defensive field goal percentage.
