The game was broadcast nationwide, with the famous Dick Vitale providing color commentary in the packed Frank McGuire Arena. "It was so exciting, very exciting," said senior guard Larry Davis, who scored 13 points on 5 of 13 shooting. "We did some things down the stretch and made some shots that were big for us. We've done that the last couple of games, and I guess we've been lucky in some senses, but weVe executed well also." The Gamecocks' winning streak is their longest since the 1970-71 team won 12 games en route to a 23-6 record. But USCs dramatic victory almost wasn't. After the Gamecocks opened the second half with a sizzling start to take a 60-69 lead when Nate Wilbourne dunked off a feed from Melvin Watson, UK came back big, using an 9-0 run over the next 1:12 to close USC's lead to 62-60 with 6:06 left. The run was sparked by 3-pointers by Scott Padgett and Allen Edwards. And the Wildcats weren't done yet, especially from 3-point range. Continuing the barrage from 3-point territory, Padgett sank another three off a screen to put the Wildcats ahead 69-67 with 2:34 left. After forward William Gallman hit two free throws to tie the score at 69 with 2:22 left, Kentucky answered with a 3-pointer yet again, as Ron Mercer drilled one to put the Wildcats up 72-69 with 2:06 left. Having completed a 26-10 run in the last six minutes, the Wildcats held a 74-72 lead with time winding down. With 30 seconds left, Watson used his quickness to drive the lane and tie the score at 72 with 27 seconds left. With the shot clock off and time winding down, Kentucky was unable to get the winning score, as Mercer's 3-point attempt as time expired sent the game into overtime. And of course, overtime was McKie's time. Scoring the six of his eight overtime points on free throws, McKie was USC's ace in the hole. In a half that saw eight lead changes, the Gamecocks kept battling from behind, as a Herbert Lee Davis 3-pointer with 12:35 left gave USC e 14-13 lead after falling behind 6-1 early. After Kentucky's Ron Mercer scored two quick baskets to put the Wildcats ahead 17-14 at the 11:46 mark, USC came back again, this time on the strength of two free throws by William Gallman and a jumper by Larry Davis to put the Gamecocks back up 18-17. The Gamecocks enjoyed their last lead of the half when H.L. Davis canned his second 3-pointer in as many attempts to give USC a 24-23 lead with 8:41 left. For the rest of the first half, Kentucky took advantages of USC's missed opportunities in going on a 10-2 run over the next 4:40 to take its largest lead of the game when senior guard Anthony Epps sank two free throws to put the Wildcats up by seven, 33-26. In the first half, the UK outacored USC in second chance points, 8-6. They also outshot the Gamecocks from the Add, hitting on 14 of their 30 shots for a 46.7 shooting percentage. USC made 11 of its 31 shots from the field for a 35.6 percentage. In the second half, the Gamecocks were able to prey on Mercer, who drew his fourth foul with 12:24 left. UK head coach Rick Pitino promptly sat Mercer with his team 48-44. With Mercer on the bench, USC went on to extend its lead to as much as 11 on Wilbourne's dunk with 7:12 left to put the Gamecocks up 60-49. It was USC's largest lead of the game. "We battled back?you never know. We made some mistakes, but I am very pleased with the effort," UK coach Rick Pitino said. "When you are down 11 and go into overtime... this is a game we should haye won... could have won." Carolina's next game is Saturday against Florida at Frank McGuire Arena. The game, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is a sellout. USC and UK will do battle once again at UK's Rupp Arena in Lexington on UK's Senior Day, March 2, at noon on CBS. The University Bookstore was able to get Vitale to do the booksigning because he was already in town for the big South CarolinaKentucky matchup on Tuesday night Vitale was as energetic as he is on TV and had ftm with some of the passing students and some of the general public that came by his table. Vitale even tested out some the fans hands when he tossed them a ball or a shirt and would congratulate every one with a "good hands!" He tried to shy away fr^rc the several Kentucky fans brave enough to show. He clearly knew last night was Carolina's night to have, and Kentucky's to steal away. It was not aU just hype yesterday as he had several words that he shared with myself and Kevin Alberse, sports director at WUSC, "If South Carolina can get to the free throw line and get dribble penetration fromMcKie, Davis, Watson, then they will win the game. If they don't, then it will be a quiet night." Vitale also spoke very highly of Eddie Fogler, the men's basketball coach of Carolina, as he mentioned the current winning streak going into the Kentucky game. "I think that anybody who wins ten games in a row, well you certainly have to credit the coach," Vitale said "You are going to get onto them if they lose. So the bottom line is you better give them credit if they win." And that they did. HSI K?s?* IM1KKI THORPE Die Gamecock wflsh Dean Felber (left), Darius Hark Bryan (second from right) ep?
