Charleston's fa\ JOHN LYONS Features Editor The five members of Jump Little Children started playing music on the streets of Charleston about two or three years ago. At the end of last month, the same five members, still under the name Jump Little Children, sold out an acoustic show at Dock Street Theater where tickets were sold for $19 each. In this short period of time, Evan and Matt Bivins, Jay Clifford, Jonathon Gray and Ward Williams have taken their music out of the streets and into the Southern circuit rock scene. Their distinctive acoustic music has earned them an extremely loyal following, airplay on regional alternative rock stations and critical acclaim. And Friday night Jump Little Children will bring it's incredibly energetic live show to Rockafella's. 71 *!x- mm : : Books, Gifts, Stc S r St. Francis ( LI oonn D-.oL D;. ihout ai /orite band, Jui The band's music is a folk-rock-hip hop-country-funk-jazz hybrid that is highlighted by a backdrop of traditional Celtic music. The combination of these disparate music genres separates the band from many others on the Southern circuit. And their unusual instrumentation helps them stand out even more. The infectious, off-beat music incorporates accordion, cello, harmonica, mandolin, melodica, standing bass and whistles into the mix. The result is catchy, off-kilter pop music that is definitely worth the price of admission, especially with the band's highly entertaining live show. The incredible amount of energy they bring into their live set may be the most exciting single thing about the band. xx/Vi #-v T"J ox/0 Koco aoirl tVioiv V I ajyTTl 1 \J JpiCAJO UUOOj OCAiCA Wltll energetic performances have been the key to establishing their fan base. "I think one of the main things is that we really have a good time doing what we're doing," Gray said "If you're up there having a really good time, it's going to rub off onto the audience." The bandhas been touring for almost a year and a half in support of their full-length album, "The Licorice Tea-Demos," and they will be releasing a new six-song album Saturday. The release party is scheduled at the Music Farm in Charleston. The new album features six live tracks recorded at shows in Athens, Charleston and Winstom-Salem, North Carolina. It will feature five new tracks and one from "The Licorice Tea Demos." Gray said the band has been writing new material since recording the first album, and they have amassed a set list of about 50 original songs. Gray, who is from Charleston, played in Big Stoner Creek before joining the band two and one-half years ago. He said he's enjoyed playing with the members of Jump Little Children more than his previous experience in bands. "It's just the right thing," he said. "It's that magical combination that you're always looking for. You can't even describe it. > "It's just meant to be," he said. "It's a pretty nice thing to find in life." It's that chemistry that has been the foundation of Jump Little Children's popularity, and that popularity in turn has brought with it attention from record labels that are still wondering if there is going to be a "next big thing" from South Carolina. xn tian Bookstore Jp Your Cross Ministries linutry Coordinator Jackie E.
