In their next game against the
rennessee Volunteers on Jan. 8, the
jramecocks again wasted no time in
umping on the opposition, having
lominated the Vols from the outset
n the 73-41 massacre.
The win, which helped USC to
ts first 2-0 conference start ever,
vas fueled by the Gamecocks' season
ugh 59.2 percent shooting from the
ield against the Volunteers.
The basketball game began
esembling a Tennessee-South
Carolina football contest ? with the
oles reversed.
In making 13 of their first 15
shots, the Gamecocks jumped to an
L8-2 lead on a junior Melvin Watson
umper with 12:07 lett in the halt.
It wasn't until the 11:35 mark
hat the Vols made their first field
joal.
USC pushed its lead to 28-4 when
Davis scored on a jumper with 8:41
emaining in the first half.
After closing the first half with
i 39-17 lead, Carolina wasted no
;ime in continuing the carnage, as
t played the second half in the same
ashion as it did the first, using a
L7-4 run to extend the lead to 56-21
vith 12:39 left.
The victory was the Gamecocks'
ughth in their past nine games
igainst the Vols.
"Haying Tennessee, I'm thinking
fs going to be 65 to 70 possessions
ind a 62-58 score," USC head coach
Sddie Fogler said after the game.
Uiaf s our third good defensive effort,
ind then offensively, we were really
jood here tonight."
The Gamecocks took to the road
ran. 12 and came away with a 73>5
victory over the Mississippi State
Bulldogs in Starkville, Miss.
The win matched the Gamecock's
oad victory output from last season
>n their first try.
The win, which gave South
Carolina a 3-0 record for the first
ime ever, pushed the Gamecocks to

Sophomore guard BJ McKie puts i
defense in. The Columbia native has
McKie, who has perhaps been
the most consistent player for the
Gamecocks so far, led the way against
the Bulldogs with 24 points on 8-of12
shooting.
Defense, which had proven vital
in the wins over Auburn and
Tennessee was once again the key
element in this one.
The Gamecocks held MSU to just
21.7 percent shooting in the second
half after the Bulldogs shot a stellar
60.7 percent in the first.
"We picked up the defensive
intensity in the second half," McKie
said.
"We talked about what had won
it for us our last three games, and
that was our defense."
"We realize now that defense is
going to win games for us," Davis
said. "That's the game plan right
now."
