is coming to Columbia in just two days and is
bringing with it some of the best volleyball action
around.
Starting Friday at 9 a.m., Southeastern
Conference volleyball will invade the New Facility
and the Sol Blatt P.E. Center.
Carolina will be looking for their first SEC
volleyball championship ever.
The Lady Gamecocks will also be looking to
give the University their first-ever championship
in any sport.
Since joining the conference in 1991, no team
has brought a championship trophy back to
Columbia.
South Carolina is the only team in the SEC ,
not to win any championships in any sport.
The Lady Gamecocks advanced to the
semifinals the past two years, only to lose to
eventual champion Florida.
This year, if Carolina is to meet up with the
number one Florida, it won't be until the
championship match on Sunday.
Carolina beat Mississippi State and Louisiana
State last year before falling to Florida 3-0.
In 1994, the Lady gamecocks defeated
Mississippi State and Alabama before falling to

With a brand-new gymnasium, it seems that
it is a perfect time to host the tournament. g<
The ironic thing is that Carolina wasn't even s<
supposed to host the event this year.

table for people to try to bid for," USC head cc
volleyball coach Kim Hudson said.
"We expressed interest along with other ir
schools, and Dr. .Mike McGee [athletics director] tl
really wanted it," Hudson said.
Hudson said that Kentucky and Auburn were tx
the other schools in the running for being the
host, but USC had many factors in their favor, w
PI think there were several things involved: v<
the timing, the new facility and the fact that we
wanted it [the tournament]," Hudson said. a<
The new facility which Hudson is talking fe
about is the Basketball Practice/Volleyball L
Competition Facility, which opened in January.
The new facility, which features a 1,600 seat h<

and men's and women's basketball offices and m
the Frank McGuire Room. a(

But that might not be the case if history
mtinues on its current trend.
The only host team to ever win the title was
11994 when the Lady Gators took the title on
leir home court.
But that won't keep the Carolina squad from
sing optimistic.
"We've played better at home throughout our
hole season. You usually play better at home
srsus on the road," Hudson said.
"I think [playing here] gives us a real big
ivantage. The fans our really loud, and I just

Robarge takes a different approach to the
sme-court advantage.
"The fact that we get to sleep in our own beds
