To be fair, I should point out that there have to be some redeeming qualities of the net, or else there wouldn't be all this hype about it. Here are a few cool things about the net. 1. News sources on the Web. Go to CNN's home page (www.cnn.com), and you'll see news that is updated almost as soon as it happens. "Course, you could always just turn on the TV, but for those who are stuck in the office, or those who are not blessed with cable, CNN and a host of other news sites like MSNBC (wwwjnsnbc.com) are geared tq emulating their realtime cable TV brethren. There is also no lack of newspapertype sites on the web. Realtime information sources. There are an ever-increasing number of Webcams and doodads out there that give you realtime video feeds of nerdy guys at their desks and other incredibly entertaining spectacles. The coolest realtime video feeds (to me) are the ones you can pull down from the weather satellites. There's something Big-Brother-ish about being able to pull up a picture of South Carolina from space that is only 30 minutes old. 3. Live audio events. Segueing from the last topic, audio and video feeds on the Web have opened up a world of possibilities. Playing against the computer monsters is one thing, but you never know what a human opponent will do. Sometimes ifs highly entertaining. 5. Hypertext. Ifs pretty obvious, and one of the first intended uses of the web, but the ability to link multiple documents together has possibilities that have still to be fully realized. Maybe you've started c noticing all the cool thing's that start s happening automatically nowadays as t a result of some of the technologies like s Java and ActiveX that are built into the a newest generations of browsers. Whaf s cool ibout this? Well, it means you can start ustomizing some of your favorite Web ites to filter out the crap you don't want o see.
