4 MARK PWAS Staff Writer Scholarships are available to students who meet various criteria dictated by the individual or group offering the scholarship. Requirements for scholarships can vaiy from the trivial (such as requiring a student to be red-headed or left-handed) to requisites based on a student's major, grade point average, religion, race or age. Scholarships are a great method to help students pay for their tuition fees, but not every student is eligible for the benefit of scholarship financial aid. Or are they? There are three scholarship services available to students and prospective students free of charge. "Hie financial aid office at 1714 Blossom Street has a financial aid advisor to help students locate scholarships that are available to them. Scholarship advisement is offered free of charge to all full-time students at USC. There are also resources available at the Thomas Cooper Library, in which a student can look through lists of scholarships that are offered based upon various criterion. It is a service that is similar to those offered by companies that require a $50 to $80 fee, but the internet service is offered for free. Interested students can find the internet address for this service at http://www.finaid.com. The service is listed under "scholarship searches"'and requires an individual to fill out a series of forms that ask for information regarding a plethora of criteria. After filling out the series of forms to find out about scholarship eligibility, the individual must apply for a mailbox on the system. Hie whole process takes from 10 to 20 minutes to complete, but it can take a few days for all of the available scholarships to be found by the | system. All three of these services are available free of charge, and the internet service does not require the individual interested in scholarship eligibility to be either a student or even a prospective student But there are scholarships out there that are | eeared towards certain students based on more specific guidelines. < The National Research Scholarship Service compiles an annual "Top 10" list of strange awards offered to college students.
