Sports Editor Those going to the football game Saturday should be prepared to boo the ^ Gamecocks. The usual calls of "Duuuuuuuuuce"7 that would be cascading down from the stands of Williams-Brice Stadium will j be replaced with the calls of "Booooooo," 1 and ifs not in honor of Halloween. Senior Duce Staley is definitely out 1 for this week's game against Tennessee, and is questionable for the rest of the ( year. Staley is hampered by a severely sprained ankle. In his absence, the job will belong to either freshman Boo Williams or junior Scott Moritz. Ifs bad enough that USCs last three football games are against Tennessee, Florida and Clemson, but now it looks as though they may have to play the rest of the games without their top offensive threat. Staley went down less than five minutes into the Gamecocks' 27-0 victory over Vanderbilt last Saturday. Carolina head coach Brad Scott said that Staley could miss the remainder of the season in a worse-case scenario. "It's very unfortunate about Duce Staley"s injury. It turned out to be more severe than what we all thought," Scott said. Scott said that the chances of Staley slaying against the Gators on Nov. 16 ire slim, but there is a possibility of him slaying against Clemson on Nov. 23. Staley's ankle was placed in a cast lue to the swelling and bleeding that showed up Sunday morning. Because sf the cast, he couldn't receive treatment until it was removed Tuesday for a sheckup. He will begin rehabilitation today. The Gamecocks are just one win shy sf qualifying for a bowl game with a 53 record. Staley entered the Vandy game needing just 33 yards to become the fifth {JSC player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. On his first five carries, he was four yards shy of the mark. Staley was then dropped for a 13yard loss on a trick play that was supposed to have him throw the ball back to quarterback Anthony Wright. Instead, he was pulled down by Vanderbilt defensive end Matt Schuckman and his ankle was wrecked. Without Staley, Scott will start either Moritz or Williams at the tailback slot. Scott said the decision will be made "probably after Wednesday's practice." In Staley^ absence Saturday, Moritz ran for two touchdowns while Williams rushed for 110 yards on 19 carries. Not only are the Gamecocks facing the toughest part of their schedule, but it comes at a time when the passing game is struggling. Against the Commodores, Wright and backup Chad Bamhardt combined to complete two of nine passes for 28 yards and an interception. Carolina proved it could win without Staley in the lineup, but that was against a team ranked second-to-last in the SEC against the run. Sports Editor Sophomore Ashley Edlund might walk quietly into practice, or into the gym on game day, but when the volleyball is in the air, she's nothing but noise. Edlund, a native of Portage, Michigan, is one of the Carolina volleyball team's more recognizable figures, and the amazing thing about all her accomplishments as a setter is that she's only a sophomore. Carolina Head Coach Kim Hudson quickly sent praise Edlund's way. "Ashley's been a tremendous asset to our program in a lot of ways," Hudson I ?:J <ar..? .t.11 saiu. 11 jruu wau.ii nci iui vcijr ivmg, jruu certainly see the intangibles that she brings to the program." Edlund's play this season has been nothing short of excellent, as she has leads the team with 952 assists in 22 matches. She is also second on the team in digs with 242. Even more impressive is that she leads the SEC in assists per game (14.5), and is second in digs per game (3.9). Her 1996 accomplishments include a career-high 71 assists in the team's win against Mississippi St., as well as being named to the all-tournament team in the Kansas St. Invitational. Edlund said the team's play takes priority over her individual numbers. "I don't really play for statistics," she said. "We all just push each other and work together. There's not really one person out there making us go." Hudson said Edlund has been a prime reason for the team's overall success. And that raises the level of the team's play." Edlund credited the team for her intensity. "We put so much into volleyball," she said. "When Tm out here, I might as well go 110% or ifs not worth it, to myself or to m$ teammates." Edlund's freshman season was as solid as they get, as she recorded 1,404 assists, the third highest single-season total in school history. She was the only freshman to be named to the District Four team, and finished second in voting for SEC Freshman of the Year. She was also named to the All-SEC Tournament team and to the All-SEC second team. Edlund's 1996 assist totals give her 2,356 in her career and places her fifth on the all-time list. The all-time leader, Tammy Correll, who played in 1987-90, recorded 5,025. Edlund, at her current pace, could break the mark during her senior season. Edlund said her sophomore year has been good because she knows more people, and volleyball is going so well.
